I need to put an ac inverter my new FJ Cruisers, and would like to mount it in the rear. One post some where a while back said to get a pair of good jumper cables, cut off the ends, and use this for the supply from the battery. It was assumed that these wires could be run under the vehicle, tucked up into the frame some how, and then throught a grommet into the rear compartment. I dont want ot mount it under the front passenger seat, since i will be using it quite a bit, and access from the rear would be a lot better.
also, any other sugestions concerning this application would be helpful
thanks

You want large wires no matter where you install it. Remember ohms law and you'll know why. If you want a few amps at 120v you need 10 times the amps at 12v! I ran #8 wires from the battery for my 400 watt inverter.

I would just get the appropriate sized wire and run it through the firewall and down one side of the vehicle. What size inverter?

re: inverter size

I have not really begun to size one. I guess what I need is somethig that will allow me to run at most a good sized wormdrive saw. most of my work has power available, in fact, I have yet to encounter an instance where i needed power where there was none, but I am sure to come across one. Cordless saws are no good, if i need the big guy.

The reason I asked, is that the wire size required will be dependent on what load you put on it (inverter size). Keep in mind that electric motors (like a saw) usually require more amps to start up than what they're sticker says.

If you're looking to run a circular saw from it think BIG! I wouldn't consider anything less than 1000w and probably recommend bigger than that. Remember power = volts * amps so to get 15 amps like a home outlet you need a 1800 watt inverter!! That's going to take some serious wire as you'll draw about 150 amps at 12 volts if you're looking for the full 1800 watts!!

COSTCO has some nice ones, about the size of a hard back book, 8" x 12" x 3" for about 80 dollars. easy hookups and two outlets, I have one mounted in my 40, works great.
