It only does this when warm. Once cold , drives ok and then does the same when warmed up. If I shift manually. From L to 2 then D, goes fine. Only problem is when in D and car stopped , will either take off in 2nd or 3rd gear until put in L , then will engage 1st gear.

What you describe is exactly what my was doing.
It was the solenoids very common on the transmissions.

Will test the solenoids from the old trans and try swap them out to see if they make a difference. Thanks
The ones for Mitsubishi are the same and cost of fraction of what the Toyota ones do you can get all new for around $100. I’m not home or I could get you the part numbers. I’m sure someone else could chime in with them and my opinion, if you drop the pan worth it to put in

Have been trying to get the Toyota ones around these parts as Mitsus are not common. New Toyota solenoids aren't available locally and the ones from the old trans are sticking. So decided to check as per FSM. Checked when cold, resistance from TCM connector and ground for all 4 solenoids, and were within spec 11-15ohms . Went for a drive and once the symptoms started, did the same resistance check and the resistance on the Lock-Up solenoid was 0 while the rest were between 11-15 ohms. Does that mean the lock-up solenoid is faulty once warm and causing the problem?

Update. Found a set of used solenoids that checked out fine with the resistance test and decided to give them a try. Since I had to drive the car to a workshop for replacing them, it started acting up on the way there and once the transmission pan was removed, tested the failing solenoids and turned out the shift solenoid no 1 was reading over 500 ohms rather than the 15 ohms that it should and the timing solenoid was over 40 ohms. Also checked the resistance at the TCM connector and it was the number 1 shift solenoid that was playing up and not the Lock-Up solenoid as previously reported. So back to the replacements , installed the used set and some fresh ATF and this has fixed the problem with my transmission. Been running well for the past week, fingers crossed 🤞, this is permanent.
BTW, the fluid that came out was in good condition but decided to just freshen it up and did the strainer too which was clean with no debris.
Thanks @ Broski
