Almost bought a used Landcruiser 100 today. Went to the bank to get the check and the loan agent asks if I had seen the Carfax report. I said 'no' and was glad that they had run it for me! Truck had nearly been totaled with moderate to severe damage from an impact with a fixed object several years ago. OUCH!!!

I'm not calling the seller dishonest because he says he didn't know...but how don't you know about something like that?

Anyways...first post and thanks for letting me vent.

Mike.

Umm, you almost bought it without knowing about that, so why are you surprised that a private seller who bought it several years ago before carfax was around/popular didn't know.

This is why you spend $100-200 for a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic you trust. They would have caught this even without a carfax.

Well I hope you do find a 100 series to your liking that WASNT nearly distroyed in an accident. My truck was in an accident but was fixed without any mishaps. I cant even tell that it was hit.

Good luck and welcome to 'Mud! :flipoff2:

I had a friend that ran a carfax, and it came up completely clean. He took it to a mechanic he trusted, and the mechanic found evidence of a serious accident.

Not everything makes it onto the carfax reports.

Welcome!

Yeah, don't assume that if the carfax is clean, the car is accident or incident free. My honda got t-boned, inner and outer rear quarter panels were replaced. You can't tell it had been in an accident except that the sticker in the driver's door no longer exists (since that portion was spliced in). When I bought my LX, I checked the carfax on it and on my honda. Honda came out clean. The carfax is good to see where the car was registered, so you know if it was driven in a place where the roads are salted (say, someone from the Upper Midwest trades their 100 in at a LA dealer). I'd say you got lucky on the carfax. It could have been nearly totalled and carfax could have came up clean.

Wow guys, thanks for your friendly responses! Thanks also for welcoming me to the forums. I'm still shopping and hope to have something soon. I am very lucky and won't completely rely on the carfax next time. I've been reading all your posts and also read Christos used LC buyers guide. I've owned other 4x4's, wrangler, suburban, excursion, k5 blazer, full size p/u, and I'm excited to have my first Toyota and LC!

Welcome, good luck on the search.

Welcome...the sooner you get your LC the sooner you'll find out everyone here has lots of good, valuable info to offer you...technical and non-technical alike ;) .

:flipoff2: (your official 'MUD welcoming salute)

This really is a good site, stick around and you’ll agree. Hope you find a Land Cruiser soon. Then tell the wife you need to take it Moab to test it out with the guys! lol :D

The only things Carfax are good for are odometer rollback or title related items (salvage, flood, insurance, etc.).

I shouldn't be telling ya'll this, but AutoCheck is now reporting dealer auction announcements, i.e. frame, unibody, etc. So that's a much better choice if you're going to run a report.

No, it wasn't white and thanks for the info on autocheck. I'm hoping to have a LC here shortly. I did a spring swap and lower on my Subaru STI so I'm hoping to have the skills for some rear OME coils, crank the t-bars, and add some Bilstiens. I already ordered some Oasis tire deflators and am looking for a compressor and tank!
