Hey everyone, I bought a '78 donor 55 to do a DB conversion onto my 69. Was wondering if anyone has a thread, has already done the work and could point me in the right direction??

I should be able to just swap entire front diffs, right?....and everything will bolt up and match perfectly and I will encounter no problems or rusted bolts right??

Also, I know that I will have difficulty w/ the booster and the 69 firewall,....years ago I remember seeing an adapter for this job somewhere,,,JTOutfitters, or SOR, I can't remember where I saw it,...should have bought one when I had the chance.... but I can't seem to find the part anywhere. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I can't do the job without some sort of adapter, I'm not a welder or fabricator or anything. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance. Kevin

Swap the entire front axle. It should bolt right up. Man-a-fre sold the adaptor for a booster for a '40 series but what others have said is it doesn't work so nice on the '55. Also it was for a GM booster not a Toyota. Does the '78 have a firewall section you can get? On page 3 of this thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj45-owner...v-resto-thread-67-central-american-model.html you can see how I swapped the firewall on my '67 FJ45LV to accept a standard 'Cruiser booster.

cruiser_guy, wow that's some buildup on your 45. Good work, looks great. Thank you for the info and the thread. The 78 does have a firewall...guess I will have to learn how to weld...and go with partial firewall swap. Looks intimidatiing to me,...but I'm up for the challenge.

your going to run into some issues any way you do the conversion. 69 has a brake hose from knuckle to frame on eash side, with 9mm hardline fittings on the frame, where the later axle will have a center drop hose to the axle with 10mm fittings. use all the brake stuff off the 78.

okay thanks. All of the 78 brake parts can do. Partial firewall swap. Getting more intimidated. While I'm at it, would I benefit any by also swapping the rear ends, from 69 to 78?

kevin, Yes you would gain some by swapping the rear also. You can call or stop by. 227-5794 Paul

I have been talking to some body shops and they recommend using body panel glue. I have to replace a big section of my fire wall and that is the way I will go. the glue has a rust inhibitor, so you should not see any rust by gluing the panels together. I am also planning on using rivets to hold the new piece in until the glue dries.

Mind you I have no body work experience, this is just what I have been told.

:steer:swapped a 69 body onto a 79 frame and axles.........:wrench:biggest headache .....well couple of them "there are many many more":frown: was the firewall and brake booster......converted to a dual circuit brake system using a Corvette M.Cyl. using Degnol's adaptor and the carb linkage was replaced with Mark A's cable conversion; you can see this on my "body transplant thread" HTH

Hey all, so the weather has finally turned fair here in Montana, and as I'm doing this work outdoors....today I FINALLY dropped the '78 rear axel/diff. Planning on dropping the '69 tom. afternoon, and doing the swap as time allows. Then on to the front end. I'm planning on just swapping the entire diffs. and figuring out the firewall/brake booster/Mstr Cyl/ as I go and as $$ allow. Am in no real rush.

My question of the day for all of you tech professionals....Can I avoid the firewall cut/weld/swap by using JtOutfitters adapter part #BBADAPT .... Toyota Early FJ40 45 Land Cruiser Brake Booster Adapter - JTOutfitters .... and an early '72 booster or mini-truck booster, and Aisin Mst Cyl (pic: Disc Brake Master Cylinder ) Or will I still run into problems with clearance of the stock carb? Perhaps if I upgrade to Weber 34/34???

Just searching for options. Lack of plasma cutter, welder, and proper technical skills ability to use aforementioned tools,.... leads one to search for aleternative options!!!!

Thanks all....Kev

If you want to use a dual circuit MC with no booster, look in the FJ45 forum for Mark's adapter and installation of a double booster. It might work on a 55 since the M/C doesnt stick out as far. Mark sells teh adapter, and the way he did the install, he did not even switch from the old style brake line, just grafted into them. Once you reda the article, you will see what I mean.
