I've just recently started to lose a bit of oil, and I found this...

(It's the upper oil pan...can you see the crack? It continues on the other side of the gusset... Bum-mer!)

Here is a shoddy video of the ordeal!

P.S. Do any of you guys have any experience with repairing cast aluminum?!??! I would love to be able to fix it in place as the Mercedes upper oil pan needs to be installed with a special tool I guess...

The amazing thing is that there is no upper gasket between the upper oil pan and the block, it is just machined so precisely... pretty sure intalling without the tool will call for RTV or FIPG!

Do you guys have any experience with aluminium epoxies? Like Henkels (Industrial Loctite) Aluminum Putty?

Hey Gang, Quick update:
-Just cleared 8K miles on the swap!
-Have the oil pan Band-Aid'd together, no problems, but a few other seals/fitttings need a little attention.
-Have FJ60 Arb bumper on the front, got it from a fellow that had it on a 1st gen Bronco oddly enough...
-Tinkered with the injection pump and timing on the motor, and dialed up the boost a bit. EGT's stay ~1000 under a good sustained load.
-Flat towed an '87 Yota 4x4 5speed van from ~1.5 hrs away. Slow to get to speed, but once there, no worries.
-Still knocks. Some folks think it's a very sick gasser, and look at it pretty concerned!

Didn't quite catch where you landed with your valve wrenches but mercedessource.com sells a really nice set of them. I broke down and got some for my 300SD and I love them!

I ended up cutting and stick welding a set of Craftman 14 mm's; they work great! I had to narrow them with an angle grinder a bit, but at the time I needed them right away, and building my own was faster and cheaper than ordering. If I were to do it again, I would likely use a cheaper set, as folks have good results bending cheaper steel (Lower Carbon /Hardness).

I also think it's a good idea for folks to buy the IP lock tool, I ended up using a bit of oak wooden dowel from Home Depot whilst waiting for the factory tool, so it is certainly something to have in your toolkit ahead of time. Sure beats drip timing...

Thanks for the build thread. Keep us posted. The long term feedback is helpful for people who might be prone to jump into a swap thinking they are going to get 30 mpg and the power of a 350 chevy..

Hey Guys, I went through and fixed quite a few of the broken links. I just cleared 10k miles on the swap about a week ago.

Kief- I see 16-18 mpg realistically; but I almost always take-off spiritedly, and at 70-80mph she doesn't exactly "slip" through the air. I am very pleased with the swap, even though there are still lots of rough edges. I really like the OM617 with the R151f, but most folks would desire the combination in a lighter rig.

Maxamillion- Here is a shot of the tank; I actually managed to get it a little higher than this. It is just roughed in with hole stamped angle bolted together and fastening to the hangers for the spare tire crossmember (That I removed.) A flatter tank would fit even higher.

@Cadin I know this is an old thread but I am wondering if you still have the truck and how the swap has gone after three years.

Hello, reviving this thread wondering too. Thinking of performing this swap!

How is this rig doing. Pondering this swap currently. Mpg changes? Ac operational?
