tranny reply

Got a 98 with 98kmiles changed at dealer at 96k...runs good. Noticed a little thunk on occasion when I release the brakes at a stop...don't know if that's brakes, u-joints or tranny....

I am experiencing the same with a 98 @108K miles. I have determined it is a transmission shudder. I thought brakes at first, but it feels the same after applying throttle and it goes in and out of overdrive when cruising. But its strange, having the same feeling when releasing brakes from stop. I am going to look into it further this weekend.

That's your driveline unwrapping, commom, just need to add some grease.

Better yet, change u-joints at that point. I don't like masking problems.

Yota, not a problem. They all will do it. My 95,99 and 2004 will all do it. A lot of threads on drivetrain bumps, wrap, etc. No big deal. Now your transmission going in and out of OD is another issue???

Transmission replaced in my 2000, around 70,000 miles.

Toyota Certified Warranty covered the cose.

Purchased the vehicle used with 50,000 miles, not sure of previous maintanence.

Now at 105,000; no issues

2000 with 150k miles. I got it at ~85k miles. AFAIK, it original tranny. I have not changed fluid, but PO may have. I know, I need to change it. No problems. Still smooth as silk. (knocking on wood!)

'98; 227,000 miles, original transmission, still running fine AFAI can tell............

99 with 95K, orig trans. having no problems.

'00 LC100, 122k miles on original trans. Partial drain & fill (4 qts) every 20k miles -- still drives & shifts perfectly, old fluid stays bright & red (full synthetic).

Here's a simple self-executing Qbasic formula I wrote for computing the total amount of new fluid, based on doing a series of drain & fills in succession:

2000 with 108,500 original miles and still going strong!:)

Great, now I jinxed myself:eek:

2000 w/ 90k. Dealer did a flush and fill last week for $109.

BTW, when did flush and fill become approved by Toyota. I thought they were proponents of drop the pan and clean the screen

When the dealers realized there was less work and more money in flush and fill.

I still don't see "Flush and fill" in the FSM or Maintnence guides. Light service = "Inspect fluid". Severe Service = "Drain and Fill"

2000 cruiser with 86,000 miles and zero trany problems.I'll change fuild at 90 service.

I think your right. Most good mechanics want to see what the fluid in the pan looks like and they like to drop the pan to look at the filter and the inside of the pan. It is good money for limited work to do the flush and fill.

1998 UZJ100 with 145,456 miles on it. Second owner with all records from previous owner and NO transmission work. I change the fluid every 30K.

Another thing,
About every other time I change the oil, I drain the tranismission. This only lets about four qts out. then I refill it when Im refilling the engine. It takes no time.

Wow! the infamous Dan Dibble graces our presence. You got plans for the LX or is staying stock?

I'm looking around. I just sold my buggy, so I have some time in between rigs. I would like to start with

SAS with coilovers, bumpers and a supercharger.

But my wife is still happy with it and if I start somthing, I will have to buy her a new one. I like not having a car payment;p

Lots of good info here.

Sounds like the easiest way to keep it fresh. What did you do, first time you drained it you measured the amount that came out and then just added that amount back in every time you did a Oil and Filter change and transmission pan drain?
