I guess that's for me...you've never ended up down in 1st gear after a long climb? Eeek, I don't alot but sometimes. With this trailer it was, not in lowrange (although the thought did cross my mind), but just in 1st gear high range...apparently alot of weight in the trailer, but wasn't a big trailer at all, U-hual single axle one.

I'm sure what was probably hurting me (though I've had this happen other times) was I had a bad fan clutch, so engine was HOT, not pull-over-now hot, but hot as in let's get to the top of this stupid hill. When it got hot, it probably starting knocking, but the computer would kick the timing back, but I'd have less power...I didn't have my laptop hooked up at the moment, so don't know...but possibly that happened...either way 1st gear on a interstate isn't all that much fun, granted most vehicles aren't going that fast then anyway, but faster than me...

Fun fun fun.. :)

I've been in 1st for at least 3-4 minutes going over a couple passes with the boat. There's one on Hwy 2 near Wenatchee, WA that requires almost full throttle for 30 seconds of that time to maintain RPMs. I try to respect it by shutting down all accessories even if its a hot day where the A/C was on. Don't let the truck get too low in RPMs as this will generate more tranny heat than if you're revving a bit. Tranny heat goes right into the radiator. Better to use a heavy foot to keep the RPM up. Would be nice to be able to lock up the torque converter manually for situations like that...

Go get a tow rig with a turbo diesel and fly over those passes at highway speed.
