Good Day All,

Trying to install a new head unit on a new to me 96 Land Cruiser. Running into a few issues. I ordered a head unit from crutchfield and their pre done wiring harness. Upon installation, the head unit would not turn on. I unplugged the rear speaker harness, and the unit turned on, but only the front dash speakers were playing (very poorly). I then plugged the rear speaker wiring harness in, and the rear door speakers came on, but soon after, the head unit got super hot and shuts off.

I have new door speakers coming in. Since the front door speakers are currently not working and I plan to disconnect the dash speakers, rear ceiling speakers, and I've already taken out the sub, would you think that the issue I'm having could be due to some type of short or exposure of speaker wire in the rear? In my limited knowledge, it seems like the unit has some protection in it and doesn't start up when the rear harness is connected because of this? Or am I way off?

Anyway, I plan to run all new speaker wire to the doors regardless if that fixes it or not. Is there anything else I should be checking?

Other question is - the factory radio was plugged into a big plug. The new harness has two plugs and goes to 2 smaller plugs. Does this bypass the factory amp? If not, why does it use a different plug than the factory radio?

Thanks for any help. This is my first land cruiser (not first toyota). I understand that there are many unknowns when cracking open a 30+ year old vehicle.

There are different harnesses for the different available audio systems - does your harness account for the fact you have a factory amp? Was your original head unit working at all?
I got the truck on Saturday. When I picked it up, it was kind of working. Sound was bad on radio and the CD player would not accept a CD. I just turned it off and drove 7 hours home with a jbl speaker.

The harness Crutchfield included supposedly bypassed factory amp (I had them pre wire it to the plug from the new head unit.)

@PastaSaladRhonda, Using the two smaller plugs is correct way to eliminate the factory amp but you also need to completely disconnect or remove the amp.
What brand/model of wiring harness to Crutchfield supplied. Metra is the best option and a search of the forum will give you the part number.

Generally most head units with built-in amps will shutdown the audio output for shorted speaker. Generally speaking the OEM wiring is sufficient. Most problems arise when the terminals of the speakers short out against the door metal. On an operating install that tests good can fail when the door card is reinstalled.

It's a meta harness. Thanks for your reply.

As stated unplug the amp and remove it. Open your glove box it is on the right side takes about 5 minutes

Crutchfield has awesome tech support for their products. Have you called them?
Yes. The folks I talked to were kind of stumped. I didn't have a multimeter on hand (will get one tomorrow) for them to further assist.

I just went out and unplugged the two plugs on the factory amp and will give it another try in the morning.

For your troubles, here's a picture of my new girl. I'll do a post for her, have documentation back to purchase. Most mechanical and suspension has been made new in the last 3k miles. Interior needs a little love, set to get it reupholstered in 3 weeks.

Thanks guys, seemingly it was the amp still being plugged in. Sorry for the dumb question, but that helped tremendously.

The front door speakers are still not playing, but the unit is running and not cutting off. The rear doors and dash speakers are working. When I install those, I will likely disconnect the dash speakers and route new speaker wire from those to the front doors.

Thanks!

As PPC has stated the shorting of one of the speakers probably led to the HU not working properly. removing the factory amp is pretty much a mainstay in replacing the factory HU.

I upgrade my speakers and had an intermittent short that took some time to diagnose since it would test good when I pulled to check but with it installed it was just close enough to some metal inside the door that the contacts would short. Added a baffle and all good after that. While this was happening my unit would also trip the thermal and shut the unit down.

Unless you've already disconnected the factory amp under the dash, that's almost definitely your problem. I see a few people suggesting it above.

The Crutchfield harness may say it bypasses the amp, but that's impossible because the amp is connected to the same speaker wires via a different harness. Your head unit is getting hot because it's fighting with the factory amp to control speaker voltages.

You can look at the two wiring options here, but what you have now is both combined and both powered. Help - Connection´s - stereo FZJ80 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/help-connection-s-stereo-fzj80.891020/post-15809672

just thought I'd add my two cents...behind the stock radio in the dash, the Crutchfield supplied harness plugs into the two gray plugs back there...
the plugs for the original radio head unit are left to just hang loose and unconnected...the Metra (or other brands) female plugs with the new harness leading to the new head unit simply plug-in to the two gray plugs and all works...at least in my 94
