Mike thanks for the heads up on this. I've been looking and missed this one. Can you 80 experts give me you opinions.

I called and talked to the owner. It's got some rust through on the fender and the frame is starting to show surface rust at the welds. He's owned it 5 years or so and hasn't driven it much lately. Center and front lockers engage quickly. The rear has trouble engaging sometimes. None of the 100k mile service has been done and the front axle seals are bad.

I was also considering the one below. Quite a bit more expensive, but it looks ready to go. I couldn't swing that right now while I could probably swing the one in Milwaukee.

The rust on the body would be a little concerning to me, not knowing what it looks like under the weather seals around the hatch and windshield. We've got an extra driver side green fender, but I'm wanting to use it because mine has a dent up near headlight.

Axle service wouldn't be hard nor too expensive as a DIY with Cruiser Outfitters kit.

If you're looking for an 80 and don't mind driving a bit, Denver area seems to have a lot of them. Since they don't salt there, rust is a little bit less of an issue up there.

Also, I found an awesome 4runner the other day that is just a completely random suggestion because I want to buy it (but can't).

What are some of the needs/wants/criteria in a new vehicle? I search Clist occasionally and will keep my eyes peeled.

1993 is OBDI instead of OBDII for 1995+ so a little more involved to jumper and count flashes for diagnosis CEL.

Front Axle stubs different length then 1995+
Lug nuts are cone vs flat 1995+

Looks to me like that rust may be on the verge of really taking over.

Too much rust for me.

Yep, too much rust for me too.

Ditto. For the right price, it'd be a good trail rig or DD if you don't mind but at nearly $3800-$3900, probably not for me.

Price doesn't offend me but... Never pays to buy anything with corrosion. Makes everything more difficult and expensive from simple brake work to major restoration chores. Surface rust on a frame isn't that big of an issue but all the associated fasteners and components are where corrosion becomes a total pain in the a$$. I gladly pay up for southern or high desert vehicles...easily worth the wait. I play in a lot of arenas and have taken the chance on rust-belt cars in the past and even the "clean" ones weren't worth the savings.

Looks like that one sold. Agree with the rest that was too much rust.

Yep, it sold. Probably just as well. I've got more projects than time. But I'm keeping my eye out for that low mileage sub $10k BJ74. A guy can dream can't he.

Jack to answer your question, I'm not necessarily looking for something particular. I've just spent the last several years watching you 80 guys go places and do things I can't, or won't, do in my 40. Plus I'm becoming more interested in doing some overlanding type stuff, and I just don't think the 40 will be well suited. Also, if I can't bring my truck back from the dead, that will make my decision for me. I can't get along without a truck.

All that said I guess I should stop bidding on that jag on Bring a Trailer.

I'm getting ready to sell my 91. It's from CA and has only been in KS since the summer of 2014. It's got a fair amount of goodies on it. It's not perfect but is still a very solid Cruiser. PM if interested.

@KS-Ryan That looks nice. However, I'm concerned about the power of a 3FE.

It's no powerhouse for sure, but it does have 4.88's and will do 80 on the highway if you want it too. It's not too bad unless you're going to spend a lot of time climbing long grades in Colorado. I usually run 55-60 and cruise when I drive it and it seems pretty happy there.

Okay fellas, I have another rig in my sights. His less than complete picture of the locker switch makes me wonder if it may just have a rear locker. Is that likely? And what seems to be the going rate for a 3x locked FZJ80 with no head gasket replacement and likely in need of tires.

For Sale: - 1994 FZJ80 Land Cruiser, Baton Rouge, LA $7500

For a 94, that seems high to me. $5k is about where my limit would be assuming it still has the locking axles underneath.

I have focused on mid 95-97. You get a lot of stuff...the important items are airbags for increased safety, and you get OBDII to diagnose easier. Slee has the full list of differences.

My .02 cents is XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

There are rigs coming up in Colorado area all the time. Nice rigs posted on MUD seem to go for a premium.

Agreed with Kelly on that rig. I saw it last night and wasn't particularly impressed for the price. If you're comfortable with spending 7500-8k, you could probably get a pretty nice stock rig for that that's a '97.

Any particular reason you want lockers?

I like surfing the Colorado Clist and that's where I see a lot of nice ones pop up - same goes for the various Texas Craigslists.
