My son and I just wrapped up a timing belt replacement a few hours ago and we're having trouble getting the 3FZ-E to run correctly. It starts up fine, and after a small adjustment to the throttle cable at the throttle body linkage, the engine can be revved up and down. When we let off the accelerator pedal and let it drop back to idle (~1,100 rpm) it runs at a steady idle for a consistent 30 seconds, starts to stumble, then dies. While it's running it runs pretty smoothly.

I'm 100% sure the timing is correct after the timing belt replacement. I also checked the valve clearances, all but the #3 exhaust were within specification (a shade tight), so we replaced the valve adjusting shim with the next thinner shim from Toyota. The other engine related things we did were change the oil and filter; replace the air filter, water pump, thermostat, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor; rebuild the power steering pump; refurbish the radiator; and clean the throttle body and air plenum with throttle body cleaner.

We're not getting any CEL codes. I was thinking of calibrating the TPS, which probably should be done anyway, and performing a fuel pressure test. Those should be pretty easy to accomplish, the FI system is almost the same as the system on the 3FE in my '86 FJ60.

Any thoughts or tips on where to start the diagnosis would be appreciated.

Sounds like it's running on the cold start injector at idle, and then when the high idle the gos away it shuts down.

Got a fuel pressure gauge?

That's one of the thoughts I had at first, I'll read up some more on that. I checked the FSM resistances on the AFM and they're way off, so I ordered a remanufactured one at NAPA, it should be here in a few days.

I was thinking of checking the fuel pressure, so I might as well put together (or buy) a gauge. I could also use the gauge for the 3FE in my '86 FJ60 if I ever need to troubleshoot it.

Thanks for the reply.
