my friend and i are about to go look at one of these with 230,000 miles for $1,500. the guys says it runs strong v-6 and only has a bad drivers half shaft. is it worth it? i dont know jack about 4skinners. anything that may be troublesome i should look out for on this particular model etc.?

thanks:beer::beer:

the 90+ 3.0's had head gasket issues. If you have the vin, call toyota and see if/when the headgasket recall was done. If it was done once a long time ago I wouldnt worry about it.

Other than that, the usual stuff: Idler arm, cv-boots, hubs, 4wd, run through all the gears.....

It's 18 years old, has 230,000 miles on it, and it's only $1500. This is waaay outside the spectrum of "common problems". If you drove it for a year and it blew up, you got your money's worth out of it.

what he said

if he plans on keepin it, elaborate how much of a pain it is to adjust valves, or do much of any work on it.

water pump aint so bad.

KLF will not try and talk you out of somthing like this. He is partial to these things. I am not

this engine is over all a decent engine, but for the slight increase in power, and compared to the one i HAD to my 22RE, the mileage sucked for what little power i got.

the half shafts, or CV shafts are easy to replace.
just not fun.

the manual transmissions are stout but if he plans on wheelin it, it has a chain transfer which sucks for upgrading.

you might get lucky and find it has, what was it Jerod, 4.88 gears?

make sure if he does buy it he replaces the fuel filter.

seems like a good enuff deal if he was desperate. personally I'd wait for a 22RE to come around.
those engines are a lot of fun to work on. that was not sarcasm.

i was wonderin if you were still around since the old days of TUT. i havent been much anywhere but this greasy tech hole section...

the 22re is sweet, but the r series trans mated to that 3.slow is almost worth the sacrifice, those things are beef.
plus you can get an adapter for pretty chep to get rid of the chain driven case

Trail-Gear Inc > 3.0 V6 Transfer Case Adapter
swap out the 3.slow for a 5vz-fe or a 3rz and your golden.\

course i am kinda biased too, I think those 2nd gen 4runners are sexy.

V6 with a 5 speed probably has 4.10's or 4.30's... Maybe 4.56's if it had the 31 inch tire option...

If it's in nice shape, it sounds like a decent deal... I payed 2k for my 22RE 5speed and it had 270k on it... But it's a pretty nice looking truck... :D

SSC 50N relay rod recall

What the hell is that about!? I keep getting crap in the mail about it for my 88 and my 92, and ive never heard of anyone having a ploblem.... Im half tempted to bring my 92 (see sig) in to the dealership and play just play dumb.

BTW what other car company does a recall on a 21 yr old truck for a problem Ive never heard of! Sh!t ford waits til atleast 10-20 people die before they even consider a recall:lol:

Actually, I *hate* that 3VZ-E engine. I've owned 3 of them, hope to never touch one again. My point before was that after this long and this many miles, any vehicle is a gamble, don't be surprised at what will fail.

the 3vz is tough to work on, lots of stuff under the hood. but i really like my 4runner. just stay away from rust, thats the shortfall of these rigs. I powerwashed out my rockers and everyother little crevis. then poured linseed oil in there and drove the piss out of it.

My 4runner as about 150K on it, twice the mileage of my jeep and it give me no problems, where the jeep always starts, it never runs good. thing feels like its going to fall aprt.

I really like the styling of the 2nd gen 4runner, it was a good comprimise to an 80 series, but i have to say the 80 is better built, only shortcoming there is the auto box.

X2. If it's rust free and has had the headgasket done, you'd better buy it. Pull the rear mud flaps, their only purpose is to breed rust. Check the operation of the rear window. If the spare tire carrier is located under the truck, that can be a real PITA to get operating properly. Manual hubs are better than the ADD ones.

hell if it was rust free I would take it, even with a blown engine. it would be great for a 5vz swap. Which I think is the best of both worlds. You get the old toyota fit and finish, with new age power. I guess when you think about it the 5VZ isint really new anymore, I bet the next swap of choice will be the 1GR.

I gotta say that I am very fond of these rigs, when I went away to college my dad gave me his rusty 94 runner, thing burned a little oil but it was very dependable. I gave that thing one hell of a test in my urban offroading course and it preformed as to be expected,...no problems at all. Then I was trying to show off for a few friends by drifting in the snow on some curvey suburban streets and put it into the ditch in front of some big fancy house. For some reason a brake line cracked, but it made it home.

Not having any time to work on it and ready for my 1st car I found a 91 runner in ohio with zero body rust. I jumped on it and the rest is history.
Here is my 94 with a trailer on it.
