I’m a life long Toyota guy, current vehicles are ‘93 HZJ75 Troopy (from Australia) and a ‘00 4Runner with a 5VZFE (US market). I’m looking at a Flex Dream ‘99 Prado with a 5VZ and wondering what I should be looking out for when inspecting the vehicle. Knowing 3G 4Runners as well as I do (have owned 3 of them over the past 20 years), I think I’ve got a pretty good general understanding but curious if there are any J90 specific things I should be looking out for?
I do have one specific question: these vehicles don’t have OBDII but I understand they do have a diagnostics system of some sort. Is anyone able to elaborate on how you go about pulling codes on these rigs? Looking at this Prado as a daily driver and want to be sure it’ll be relatively easy to maintain (as far as imported vehicles go).

Can't speak to the OBD since I had a KZJ version but you're right in thinking it's much like the third gen 4Runner. Lower ball joints were the first thing I did... Are you getting a manual or an auto? The manual was really nice with the two to one transfer case.
I currently have an HZJ77 series (wagon). Between the two of them the ride had almost zero similarities except they were both fun lol.
The one I am looking at is an auto. My other two trucks are manuals but this one will be a daily for my wife and will replace her BMW AWD diesel wagon, which is also an auto. She can drive a manual just fine, just prefer an auto for this application. Is the T-case different on the autos than the manuals?

Likely the same. I just really enjoyed 1st/4 low. Did you have a 4runner with a full-time case? That's the other nice thing with the Prado 90s (at least the JDM ones): full time 4wd.
I do miss mine.
I had an ‘02 4Runner with multi-mode case but my current ‘00 is part time (with rear e-locker).
Went ahead and bought the Prado last night! Man, it’s such a cool little truck. Excited to play with it. It’s still in Vancouver, gonna flay back and get it in the next few weeks.

I have a important thing to share with you all. The Prado 90 came in many trims levels with the FX,GX and GL being the lower cost models without ABS/VSC and the TX,TZ,TS and TJ being higher up members of the family. On ABS/VSC models the ABS brake master cylinder is 2K to buy because its getting hard to find and uses a computer and servos.

Mine works! It was kicking in all the time when I first got the truck with worn brakes and tires, low fluid. ABS still fires sometimes in the wet. I locked it up for a turn off the highway and the rear brakes engaged meaningfully for the first time…scrubbed the surface rust off the rear rotors. Full brake job and a set of K02s since then, but curious why the rear brakes were not engaging for months of daily stop and go driving (mail delivery at the time).
Hi, asking if this community can help point me towards resources for an ac compressor for a 1999 KZJ90. I am looking for a compressor with or without the clutch. PartsSouq and other sites indicate the compressor part number (PN) is 88320-35610. I cannot find any new offerings for this PN and have attempted to locate a like-part here in the US. What I can find on Ebay appear to be cheap, non-OEM reproductions. The back of my current compressor has part number 42700-4555 and says its a Denso 10PA170 (or O?). I cannot locate any parts under these numbers at Denso, Napa, etc. When I search for ac compressors for a 1999 4Runner (lots of parts crossover between the two platforms), I see options that appear visually identical aside from a grooved belt pulley. My little Prado has a v-belt pulley.
Any help would be most appreciated. The picture included is from the back of my current compressor. As an alternative, I may be looking for a shop that specializes in remanufacturing AC compressors here in Phoenix. Thanks in advance for anyone's time.
