I have a 1989 toyota short wheel base 4X4. It has the 3.0 V6 in it. Nothing fancy. Just a base pickup. It has 201000 mi. on it. Is a daily driver and is in great shape overall. I keep her maintained religiously and fix anything out of the ordinary at once.

I have developed a clanking when you shift. I hear it when I shift gears. I guess mostly going into third gear, but somewhat in all going into all gears when shifting. I just figured no big deal...drive shaft u-joints are bad. It sounds exactly as if the front one is clanking when you unload then load it up. Got it up on lift to replace both of them. Put a bar to them just to see and there is NO play in them. I can't really reproduce the clank on the lift. t seems to be in the transfer case.

Anyone have any wisdom on this issue?

Thanks in advance guys!

can you please tell me what a posi is. oh and before you tell me please research it.

Posi is slang term in which you would define a 'locked' rear end. Its much easier to say "does it have posi?" than it is to say "Does it have an open differential, a limited slip, a lunch box locker, or some type of selectable differential lock?"

In example, when I worked the parts store in town, If i were to say "does it have a locker or limited slip?" to a customer most looked at me like "WTF?"

If i were simply stating "does it have a posi?" most would say "no, both rear wheels dont spin when im stuck"

Posi was an early term used by GM, it stuck with the old timers. I grew up with old timers, i learned from them. As did the majority of the people I associate with. Maybe its a difference in culture.

BTW- This is without research, Im not ignorant. Just accustomed to talking to people who have no prior knowledge of the off road world, no offense meant to the OP.

you are wrong posi is a term that gm coined buy gm, and you are not talking to the people at the store if a toyota is locked they would know it. because there are no locked diffs in a toyota in the us unless they are e locked or they bought the lockers themselves.

there is a double cardian joint on the front drive shaft, there is also a zirc grease fitting in the middle of that joint. you have to look at the card on your driver side viser. get under the truck with it in 2h and your hubs unlocked and look up in that joint and see if it is dry. and that might be your problem.

did you remove the driveshafts and check the joints?

I swear in mine they always feel fine when still in the truck but drop a shaft and roll the ujoints around in your hand...then decide theyre fine........

hope that is your problem cause once for me it was teeth partially missing off the ring gear and a pinion that looked bad.

good luck!
