Is the above setup capable of maintaining highway speeds (70-80) at appropriate RPMs? I guess I'm wondering if it would work as a DD, or if the gears with 35s would relegate it to a trail rig.

Thanks!

Well, at 80 you're going to be turning nearly 3500 rpm. With the 22RE, getting it up to 80 is going to be the issue.

Play around with the numbers here: http://www.4lo.com/calc/gearratio.php

Thanks! Yeah, I know all about the 22RE and it's (in)ability to fly down the highway. I guess I'm wondering if this combo is a 45-55 MPH max (with acceptable RPMs) or if highway speeds are only limited by the 22RE's potential.

My FJ-40, with H55F 5-Speed, 4.56s and 35s is very comfortable 2350 RPMs at 75ish...so I figured the 5.29s might further limit a Runner's top-end.

I'll mess around on the link...

I think what your definition of a DD is will also factor in as well. My DD sees a minimum of 60-70 miles per day and I average close to 2000-2500 miles per month with work, so for me it wouldn't work. If your daily commute is 10-15 miles then it might be OK.

I agree,

My truck has this set up 35" tires 5.29 gear ratio on the differential and I can cruise on the freeway at 80mph and 3500rpm. Now the question is, will you able to stop your rig at that speed if needed to?

I'm gonna be the grouchy old guy here and tell you guys to SLOW THE HELL DOWN. I'm glad you're not driving that fast in a lifted, high CG, under-powered, under-braked, big tired rig around here. One evasive maneuver and that truck will be a yard sale all over the highway.

My truck is very solid and tight, alignment is perfect, and tracks perfectly. I had it up to 75 once and it was scary.

Go buy a sports car if you're in a hurry.

I'm not grouchy or that old, but I am with KLF on this one. The guys in my office make fun of me for driving soo slow.

I am simply trying to determine how low-geared the above example would be. I had an FJ-55 with a 350/SM465 and 33s that was pushing 4000 RPMs at 60 MPH.

I've had my FJ-40 at those speeds...on wide-open stretches of Texas highway in the middle of nowhere.

I'm simply wondering if I can "replace" my FJ-40 and my 98 4Runner with a rig that can handle DD and light trails...that's all. I'm not in a hurry, but driving on the highway at 15-20 MPH below the posted speed limit isn't exactly safe.

Ahhh.... if that is what you are after, I would sell the 40 and keep the 98 4Runner (in your sig so guessing that is the one you are referring to) and build it into a nice DD/ weekend wheeler. They are pretty well built stock and with a set of CO's, some gears and some light armor, you will have a pretty good dual sport rig. Jason (Jason in TN) has a super nice 3rd gen that he calls his wheeling rig, but I would DD it any day.

I love my 90 pickup, but after buying my 4Runner, it would be hard to go back to it as a regular DD again. The ride and driveability of my 98 is just better, and for what you will likely get for the 40 you should be able to do some nice upgrades and still have some walking around money. The 2nd gens are nice, but if you have a 3.4 in the 98 then you will miss the extra pep. Just my $0.02.

Yeah...the problem is the Princees likes the top off on the 40. Not that a 1st Gen will help...she thinks they are the redneck flagship (which means she doesn't like them and I REALLY like them)

I've had a couple (85/86) minis and have always wanted a first gen 4Runner. This one: http://columbusga.craigslist.org/cto/3890096568.html

was one I liked the look of...minus the wheels and, quite frankly, with some 33x10.50s....though I'm sure a trie size down-grade would require a re-gear from the 5.29s

I've put 205K (it has 260K total) on the 98 with no issues...so your right, of course.

I understand completely, and I am in the same boat as far as the 1st gen 4Runner goes, I got an 88 with a blown motor that I have been planning to rebuild for a few years now.

I would say that if the 98 has been solid, I fear you will be generally unhappy going to the 89. As far as tires, a 22re/ auto/ 35 combo I feel like will be a dog on the highway. I don't care what the rpm chart says. My little pickup has 4.30's/ 5spd/ 22re and it still feels sluggish with 265/75's on it (32"). My 80 has 5.29's and while it will run 70, it doesn't like it very much.

The auto is a leech and in reality 33's with the 22re/auto might be OK, but you still won't be able to whip out and pass very well like you can in the 98, and pulling hills will probably be slow and tedious. Those charts show you the gearing, but the weight of the tires, contact area, etc. they don't. Not to mention I feel like your mileage with that setup will probably be in the low to mid teens.

Not trying to talk you out of anything, I love the 1st gens, but I ain't sure the swap for your 2 for that 1 will net a positive end in this case.

If you have the room, try and find a beater 1st gen to add to the collection, that's what I did and I don't have the room. :)

I went ahead and posted it in the classifieds...I just need the temptation removed.

A healthy 22re can handle 4000 rpm all day. Don't worry...

Now with that set-up drive-ability is a different issue. I personally think 4.88 is not enough gear and 5.29 is too much. Kinda of hard one for sure...
