Can you post a closer up picture of the tubes coming out of the heater core? I need to remove and replace those tubes on mine....actually make them be different in the engine compartment for my diesel swap.
Thanks
Dazed

If you look through some of those links I posted I think you will see some pictures. The heater core itself just has two stubby short metal tubes ending in a flare (are you asking to see that? I can post pics of the aftermarket heater core I have...it will be some time before I can get round to taking the evap core and all the stuff loose to get the heater core out and have a decent pics of the two long metal tubes.). The metal tubes that go through the firewall have a flare on one end and mate with the heater core with an o ring between the flares and a type of "clasp" thing I've never seen before...then both tubes run across the top of the heater box and back through the firewall.

Hey Dazed, here is a picture of the tubes...one badly mangled.

Elbert, dash comes out pretty easily once you get those two bolts out about the column, and then you can get the whole heater box out without having top mess with the Evaporator.

thanks for the update....since I'm this far along when I get back from this weekend I'm going to pull the main dash frame like you suggest and go from there.

From what I can see it looks like I have some corrosion around those little clasp things...I doubt you can buy those from Toyota....if they don't' come off I guess I can try used or potentially get the new heater core soldered...but I want to avoid the solder routine unless that the only choice.

I guess if you could find a similar sized core you might be able to rig up something..

Blue.. did you take those little clasp things off there..where the heater core mates with the hard line yet?

Thanks for the pictures. Can you get to the pipes with just taking the dash off? My heater core is in good shape but my pipes either at the firewall or in the engine compartment are leaking. I can't get to them in the engine compartment easily.

I can't quite see how you would get the thing out without taking everything out. the pipes are held in with little brackets and you can't get to the screws unless you pull the whole box free.

those little clasp things....not available from Toyoda that's for sure. Not sure what is included in the aftermarket stuff, will find out today.
Yes I did take them off, they came off fairly easily for me, no corrosion, the whole arrangement seems pretty tenuous to me.

I have not tried to source the metail tubes, not sure but I would guess not avaliable new at all..ask Beno on this board. I assume those tubes are metric, but you might be able to fit a similar sized SAE tube...hell I don't know sizes in copper/brass tubing but getting it bent the same would be a nightmare. Probally have to buy used if you can find them.

Or resort to swapping in a different heater core of similar size and figuring out a solution to run out through the firewall with metal tubing, steel braided hose or something that works and it not at risk of wearing or getting cut up crossing the firewall.

I hope I don't run into the same issue becuse I'll probally do some creative (red-neck) engineering for a solution. Tig weld AN fittings to a heater core and route out to engine... Got to have a functional heater.

I found a set of tubes....old of course and guess I have to put my faith in them lasting. Amazon has a pretty good listing for brass tube, metalsonline has some too. I was thinking of bending up a set and soldering to the core. It is already getting cold in NY so yes, need a working heater. I ordered up some foam to so I am going to re-foam the whole thing....it never stops. Got the core at Partstrain, 78 bucks.

Subscribing to this.
I think this is gonna be one of those projects where I think "well, I'm in this deep already..." (and yeah I also slightly bent one of the tubes going thru the firewall removing a hose with pliers! $hit).

Seeing as how the tubes are NLA, is an aftermarket core - AND then some accumulation of hoses or AN-ended braided line a possibility?

I echo Elbert, there's gotta be a way to refurb this w/o being a metallurgist and forming my own tubes out of raw copper!

watching...

SOR had a set of tubes in good shape.

I am thinking I should go into the fabricating business and make all these little parts that you can't find anymore....like the tubes, or heat shields for the cat and muffler.....

Related FJ60 HVAC question:

My Fresh/Recirculate air control lever is stuck at about the central position. It has some give to it when I try to force it - does not feel like a frozen cable. Feels more like the door/valve on the end of the control cable is stuck.

In your disassembly have you run across where the fresh air/recirculate "valve" is located?

Thanks

Jim

Here is a closeup of the mechanism. My only guess is there is something broken/stuck/off somewhere in this combination of levers. I found my heater valve working very stiffly, thought it was the valve but the cable needs some serious lube, I plan on lubing the cables as much as possible. (that's not a metaphor:D)

Thanks Bluewalt.

Is the door visible in the photo the fresh/recirculate mechanism?

Looks like I'm in for the fun of pulling the dash....sigh.

Holy dusty buildup

well, like most things the job just keeps snowballing. Decided to pull the a/c box too and kinda glad I did since it looked like this! There was so much stuff in the evap core, the picture does not quite do it justice.

....maybe why some say their a/c just does not seem as cold as it used to be. Back to work, another perfect day in the Northeast to keep working on the project
