It was working fine. Worked great every time i put my tool box in and out the truck for three weeks. Then i went to put my tool box back in one day and window wont go up or down . cant open tailgate. this is driveing me nuts. Whats the normal cause for the rear power windows to stop working? i seem to have power to both sides of all my fuses. i stuck test light in harness coming from hardtop at rear of truck One wire had constant power. wich of the other wires in that plug. controll the rear window? Or are them wires just for the wipper and squirt bottle and defrost back there,. if thats the case wheres the power conector for the rear window.
 
:hhmm:, first off there is i believe a circuit breaker by your fuse box it is yellow, then on the drivers side passenger behind the drivers side door is a relay box that controls every thing dealing with the door, so it could be that.
 
its the tailgate window not the door window. my truck has manual door windows and manual locks. only power window is the tailgate window. is there a way to run a three way switch back and over ride the factory switching and power leads?
 
Thanks but im a big dummy and i just figured it out. The rear wiper arm wasnt in the up position completly and the safty switch in the window stuff wouldnt let it go down because the wiper arm wasnt stowed up all the way by a half inch rofl
 
I had a 87 runner years ago, when I started reading this thread the first thing I thought about was the rear wiper. Glad you found it.
 
I got the field service manual downloaded on my notebook pc. I was reading that and discoverd the rear wiper had a safty feature for the window. so i slaped my self real hard. walked out put it up all the way window worked lol
 
I truly wish the Japanese gentleman who designed the rear tailgate had given it a little more thought. Having to let the window down to open the tailgate is a real pain. A clamshell design would have been so much more functional.

i beleve the canda version i forget the name of it. had a clam shell design for the 84 85 86 ? modle years.
 
tailgate not opening wouldnt be that bad of a issue i could deal with it. but my kid is in a wheelchair. has cerebral palsey. and need be able to load the chair and such. so glad thats fixed. still gota redo front cv axle or the boot. gonna have new flywheel and clutch kit tomorow. then to decide when im gonna do the 5 speed swap. my buddy wont be able to help for about a month. so gota baby this auto in mean time.
 
When I bought my '87 everything worked ( long enough to drive it home :)) but within days the rear window would not come down. Got that issue corrected and then the door would not unlock ( you could not even physically pull the lock up ).
That issue was corrected but as they say on the info-commercials.....but wait...
even with the lock situation corrected the door still would not open. ( crimped cable)
An interesting ordeal but all is well. The internal workings of that door would make NASA proud.:D
 
All things considered, the fact that so many of our 1st gen rear windows still work, or are at least easy to repair, speaks volumes for how durable and well designed they really are.

That being said, i really wish there was a manual override for the motor, like a removable hand-crank or similar...
 
In what year model did Toyota go to the single "clamshell" door that was hinged at the top?
 
i loved having the liftgate and tailgate on my fj62. was great on them lunch breaks during wheeling trips was place to sit out of the rain while talking to everyone .

Exactly, I think this is the best setup. I cooked a lot of meals on the tailgate of my FJ62.
 
It is hard to see the "downside" of a tailgate / liftgate combination. It has to be a more functional design that what is on my '87.
 
Try opening a huge liftgate like that in your garage, with the garage door down. You have to pull waaaay forward so you have enough room.
 
ok front door window question. my rubbers in the window channles on upper parts of doors are real tight. and when i roll my window down it pulls the rubber tracks out the tops of the door. anything i can lube that with ?
