The timing kit installation kit says it needs 3.785" minumum or a head saver shim kit must be installed. He is at 3.764", measured three times.

The headsaver shim kit is .020". If installed it will still not be within tolerance. He is using the Fel-Pro 8807 SP.

The block is a 1985 "Laser" block as well as 1985 Pear shaped exhaust ports. So the head and block are correct for each other. I'm thinking the block has been and the head has been shaved too much.

"Adjustable Cam Gears are the only way to change cam timing on 20R, 22R, 2RZ and 3RZ series Toyota motors and still be accurate. Both single and double adjustable camshaft gears are available from LC Engineering. Adjustable cam gears are generally used to correct camshaft timing after the head has been milled or when the block is decked. Cam gears are an effective way to dial-in a camshaft by advancing the cam for low-end power or retarding the cam for top-end power. Adjustable cam gears can be used with mechanical fuel pumps by machining the concentric fuel pump drive to clear the 3 separate 10mm bolts on the adjustable cam gear. This is made easier by reversing the bolts in the cam gear. "

Howdy! So, could you use two head gaskets to make up the difference? John

with a head shim...or two head gaskets, you're gonna blow something out....

new motor time if you ask me...or, the cam gear.
