Hi guys,

I have purchased a 1995 80 series last week and the gearbox appears to be shot, it is slipping in all gear shifts + struggling to go into reverse + pouring trans fluid all over the ground when stopped (still driveable but don't want to risk damaging further so haven't driven since) . Getting quotes of between 5K and 7K to fix from an auto trans specialist. My question is, if I get an A343F - Will it be a straight swap? I am thinking about buying a 2nd hand gearbox and want to know if I need like for like or there is other options.

Any advice is welcome if I'm not on the right track and thanks in advance for any help.

I should also add that the fluid appears to be coming from the bell housing, cheers.

Getting a 442 is going to be easier than the 343 I would imagine. Also parts availability from what I've seen is still better for the 442, at least in the States. I would personally just get another 442 if it comes down to that. But if it comes down to replacing mine, I'd probably go into overdrive collecting parts for a manual swap.

This is going to depend on how the Aussie 80s were configured. The US 80s with A442F transmissions have a separate TCU for the transmission, in addition to the ECU for the engine. The US 80s with the A343F have an integrated ECU/TCU, with different programming for both.

The A442F is also a hybrid operating system, hydraulic/electronic and the A343F is fully electronic. It's unlikely you can swap one for the other; it's not possible to do that with the US models.

5-7k is a lot to rebuild a transmission. The consumable parts aren't 1k, all told. Unless they're hand polishing the case, and all the internal parts as well, they want too much for their work.

Your leak is very likely due to one, or more, of the external seals having failed. It's slipping because the friction discs are not frictiony anymore. If it runs at all, that's probably all it needs; these things are pretty tough. If I had to choose, I'd pick the A442F over the A343F.

I made that word up. I'm planning to copyright it, just so you know.

Where are you seeing parts for the A442F? The overhaul and rebuild kits have been gone for a long time. The A343F kits just disappeared a couple of months back.

@Malleus
I just bought a throttle cable few months ago from partsouq because mine broke. As far as I know the throttle cable for A343F is NLA. That's a very likely wear item. The A442F was installed in vehicles up until 2006 wasn't it? Why would parts for it go NLA before parts for the A343F? I did look on partsouq just now and it seems like OEM gasket sets are still available, clutch packs and such not. I've seen upgraded valve bodies for sale in various places.

Master rebuild kit.
Also looks like Raybestos has parts available for order.

I'll just keep changing the fluid in mine though and hoping it doesn't go. That's not a job/cost I want to get in to.

In the US, the A442F was only installed in the '93–'94 Land Cruisers. There are aftermarket parts a–plenty, but they aren't Toyota quality. There is only one US auto transmission parts manufacturer that makes parts in the US, and not all their parts are made here, and they do not make Land Cruiser parts here. Everything else is Chinese.
