Got a fun summer of driving with the Foyota, although with it's still growling old drivetrain. But a new winter for projects is just around the corner. From some inexact but decent measurements taken this morning, I'm finding that the 55's OAL from machined forward face of tranny to the rear face of the brake drum is about 21 5/8", The same setup from the 60, which is actually shorter measures close to 20 5/8". Maybe I could drive home from my mechanic friend's place with an inch more splines showing. From the front face of the trans to the front driveshft face is about 4 1/4" on both the 55 and 60, so driving home with front wheel drive is a no brainer. But, what comes into my head is that a 1" spacer, maybe even a 1/2" spacer between the flanges could actually incorporate a brake rotor. Now I'd only need a place to anchor a Willwood manual lever operated caliper for an E brake. I used the wilwoods on my skidsteer with simple fabbed mounts and some used honda rotors. Very effective setup. I'm wondering if others have done this mod. The need to make up an inch or so leads nicely into the disc parking/ebrake.

Over all haven't heard good things about the exposed disc brake that mounts to the back of the transfer case. Think I would start searching for a split transfer case hand brake components. Another thing to keep in mind is 8/84 the bolt pattern on the on driveshaft changed. Not sure of the date of the 60 series T&T.

OK, I went down and measured the flanges. Dangit, all the flanges on this 60 stuff are larger than my '78 and '79 flanges. Instead of sourcing parts hard to find partrs for the split case, I will start looking into a transmission output shaft for the '78 trans that was coupled to the t-case I just rebuilt. One thing always seems to lead to another and in this situation I couldn't bear to bolt this rebuilt case up to that worn input shaft. I do have some thoughts about an interesting repair, and no, it isn't welding up the splines and reshaping them with an angle grinder (though I have read about that here). Thanks for the heads up on the flanges L.I.theP.

Another year went by so this morning it was time to decide on the one piece or split transfer. My parking brake setup I built with a 1930 model A Ford lever works so well and was already done, along with the fact that I had so much into the totally rebuilt one piecer that I went that route, The Foyota made a perfect vehicle to pull the whole works upwards and out with my 5 ton Beebe hand crank winch. My son showed up just in time to pull the drive shafts and do what little else need to be done under the rig. I was a bit worn out from having just installed a ford 9' rear axle from a '71 f100 under my woodie wagon with no helper. The bench seat and floorboards came out in ten minutes then I decided to remove a 2x2 square tube crossmember which I had installed for floorboard support. It was installed to have enough clearance for trans/xfer removeal, but maybe not from over the top. We cut it out with a sawzall and will adapt tomorrow for bolt in/out in the morning. Pretty much a walk in the park with the greatest access ever! From driving it into the shop we had the rebuilt case and trans bolted onto the bellhousing in 2 hours. Now I have that nice H41 and split case to put in another project yet to be disclosed....
