77 with carb issues

Hi,
I have a 77 Fj40 with carb issues. The past few weeks I've done a power steering conversion, timing and reset the valves. The truck was running great, took it for a burn up and down the road and after about 20 min of driving got back and it was running really rich black smoke out of the exhaust. I set the idle mix screw all the way in and then it ran better about 20 min later it acts up again. I've rebuilt the carb twice now so I'm wondering is it worth it to buy a weber carb? Ive heard mixed reviews about them wondering if anyone on the island runs one and likes it? or is there a good carb shop in the victoria area that could do a really good rebuild on the original?

Great question - I am interested in getting my carb rebuilt on my 45 as well. I recall there is a fellow south of the border who specialises in carb rebuilds for FJ's and his prices are reasonable...will look for it.

FWIW, I don't think a Weber is the way to go. They are a common swap, but not really designed for the size of engine from
what I've read. Do you have a 2F service manual?

Thanks cruiserpilot Ill check out those carbs from trollhole. I only have the haynes manual is the 2f service manual more detailed?

I replaced the one on my 78 40 with a knock off from china

Best 200 bux I've spent on the 40 so far, this was after rebuilding the stock one, these work well.

Fuel injection is all I can say . When you get tired of screwing around with carburetors gimme a shout and I'll build you a TBI setup .
