nice rig---74 is the best year EVER built as per apetterson~~~ and I have to agree:D

Alrighty, i've ordered the Replica Tank from CCOT on Friday. Hopefully it'll make it in tomorrow or so, so i can get the 40 back on the road!

In the meantime, i cleaned out the lines as best i could, went through the filters and replaced the fuel lines with new ones. Also prepped the Tank Location to receive the new one. Still have to pick up something to replace the Felt with that they used. :meh:

Seals and Boosters

Quite a few things have been replaced by Calico before it was put away. I did clean out the cooling system already, but definitely will go through it again to make sure. The Booster was replaced by Calico when he did the Front Disks, but it may not be right. I'll definitely look into leaks and such once i change out the Brake Master!
The only oil related leak i found was between the Tranny and Transfer case after i took off the skid plate, so i'll look into that as well.
Thanks for the heads up!

John, you sold it!

Trust me, it was no easy feat! I must've caught him when he was in a weakened state of mind :hillbilly:
No worries, though, since i'm just down the road from him and if i should sell it, he has the right to buy it back first! ;p

your pretty lucky to have a friend like Calico...

Thanks! Totally am! Even though he always try to sell me things :flipoff2: Once the tank is put in and i got all the obvious things and fluids done, it'll be driven daily, with adventure trips on the weekends as well! I'm also going to see if i can throw my bikes on there (Either with a trailer or on the back with a dirtbike rack).

That said it will start to leak now

Sonofabitch you Jinxed my ass now! :grinpimp:

Prepare for a trip this weekend! Tittie Marcus might even get his Cruiser together in time (He says that a lot though, doesn't he.)

Thanks for looking guys, i'll try to keep this updated as best i can

So the Tank came in today and as soon as i got home, i opened up the box and started playing with it!

The Tank appears to be made in Taiwan, at least that's what it said on the box , but appears to be rather nice. The interior is just galvanized steel, with the exterior being coated in black primer or the sort. Cannot tell.

Rinsed out the tank with some gas, just to make sure.

Almost all the connections were capped off. Far passenger side lip has some sort of protection on it as well.

Wholes of the float and everything lined up well and screws went in good.

So, to counteract the whole rusting shenanigans and chafing of the body that the stock tank has, i grabbed some water repelling one sided tape and put it on the spots where the tank touches the body. I'll take the tank out in a month or so and check what it looks like and update it. :grinpimp:
ZObpJhAh.jpg

Sadly, even though CCOT say that the tank comes with a new float, it was not included in my delivery, so i had to re-use my old one. Which also means that i didn't have a proper gasket, so i temporarily slabbed some gasket maker on it and re-installed the old float. I'll replace that soon just to be safe, though.
fLhDks4h.jpg

With all the extra padding at the bottom, the tank fit snug, but well. I didn't notice any metal to metal contact anywhere, so hopefully that'll prevent the same thing from happening again.

Replaced the old lines with new ones, plumbed everything back up and went for a drive. Started great, without choke and two pumps of the pedal. Fuel started flowing relatively quickly (Considering all the lines were now empty, that's pretty good :hillbilly: ). No stumbling or cutting out anymore, fuel flow seems good. I'll go out on a longer drive tomorrow to make sure, but so far it's looking rather good! :D

Anyway, that's it for today for me. Thanks for looking!

:bounce: sweet man! The ol 40 is going agin!

Now a trip is in order. May be last chance it likes it out there. I am glad I sold it to someone who will appreciate and take care of it.

Good.job.

Got the last few things buttoned up on the 40 (Change the Tranny, TCase and Diff Fluids) and gave it a quick once over.

So today my long-time friend and roomie, who has a '69 Cruiser as well as Calico with his new Montero Daily Driver and a few other guys went out to Vasquez Rocks and Rowher Flats today. Here are a few pictures!

"So anybody know where we are going?"

Coming down he almost flipped it, but somehow made it after all :flipoff2:

Calico and his Daily Driver Montero. All stock except for tires. He lead us everywhere, but sadly the tranny started slipping when we almost made it to the top :crybaby:

Back down we went.

We met up with Calico further down and headed out of Rowher. Got some food and took the freeway back home.

Really fun day, to say the least! Calico is the perfect tour guide (Next time he'll bring his Pig :flipoff2: ).

Things that broke:
  • Brake Light Switch (Or something. Neither work now :D)
  • Turn Signal relay (It now blinks depending on engine speed)

And that's it for me. My buddy now has a definite Valve Cover Gasket Leak in addition to his main seal leak. Calicos Montero calmed down and seemed fine for the rest of the drive.

And that's about it! I have a good bit of GoPro Footage which i will try to cut down to something small and digestible tomorrow.

Thanks for looking!

Alright, just got done editing the video. Haven't done it in a while, so definitely rusty! Sadly, cut a few things out, but for the first one, not so bad :D

 most cool man. 40 are a blast to drive and watch in action when put to task.

So, having had those little electrical foibles (The Amp-Meter bounces around, system discharges when lights are turned on, With Lights on and at idle, the turn signal gets slower and slower and eventually stops), i decided to start working my way backwards. Stopped by Specter Offroad yesterday and picked up a new Voltage Regulator for 16 bucks to throw in.
By the way, if you are anywhere near these guys, the shop is worth a look. They have quite a few really awesome, and rare, 40s and 55s and the such sitting in there! Sadly, did not have my camera with me .

Anyway, uninstalled the old Regulator today and threw the new one on there. Just look at how pretty the new one is! :D

Seems like there is no more bouncing of the needle at any RPM, but i have not properly tested the Headlight/Blinker combo and the such. Something i will do tomorrow, more than likely, on the way to work.

That's it for now. Next will be the Engine and Transmission mounts (After seeing them when i was doing the Transmission and TCase fluids, they're all pretty bad), so those are going to get done this weekend, probably :hillbilly:.

Another thing i have to check out is now with the new Fluid in the tranny, 3rd gear is not really that happy. Bit notchy to get get into gear, especially when cold (Valvoline 80w90). I might just drain it again and try the Redline stuff that many people are very happy with., we'll see :flipoff2:

Thanks for looking!

Just a small little update.

Switched out the Fan today after Calico broke mine :flipoff2:. (He stopped by and saw that it was disintegrating, so to me, that means he broke it because he found it!)

AYu70Po.jpg

Yeah, think it was about time for that one to go. Mind you, it didn't overheat or anything, it just would've ruined the waterpump.

Took the shroud off, but it wasn't cut in the bottom, so it was a pain. Fan was actually touching at the bottom, so when i made the cut, i was able to bend the shroud a bit to make it work properly.

Installed was a new Middle East fan, so now it really sounds like a big tractor! :hillbilly:

We also were out in Lucerne Valley and Calico yesterday, so here are a few shots of that!

That's it for now. More soon!

Finally back with the Donkey!

Thank you for all the kind words!

Been a while, but work was calling.

While i was gone, i dropped the 40 off at Mark's Offroad to give her a quick once over and check out the Electrical issue i've been having.

Mark managed to find that my steering was rather lack-luster and slightly bent, so he fixed that right up!
FrZpmij.jpg

He also found that the rear-diff was rather loose, so luckily, calico had a Pumpkin with an LSD that i was able to buy off him and Mark then installed in the rear! :bounce:

Had another shop do the electrical, which they managed to find, but they were a little iffy with other regards. The proportioning valve installation was rather horrid and the new booster they put in works, but the rod was not adjusted, so it's not doing too much...

Take a look:
dfYbnVw.jpg

New Booster, FJ80 Master (I believe) and Summit Proportioning valve. Sadly, it's just dangling there right now, so i'll definitely have to fix that right away.

After i got back, i had a few more things i wanted to get done.
Had a new exhaust made by a local muffler shop. From the Headers back, with extra thick tubing, routed ABOVE the skid plate, contrary to where it was.
vvw8cpy.jpg

No more blowy exhaust! It does get a little warm in the foot well now, though :D

New tires were on the agenda as well. Grabbed some funky wheels from Calico again and had new 33x12.5x15 BFG Mud Terrains installed. Wish i had picked up the wheels earlier and had them sand blasted and powder coated, but oh well.
Mark also noticed that two studs were done for, both are on the driver side rear, so i'll have to fix those as well as soon as possible.
XXQewSA.jpg

The tires ride rather well. Very little noise. Once i can escape the asphalt, i'll give some feedback on how they perform there. Overall, i like them!

The Tire Carrier that was installed on the truck was mounted directly to the body. This made me a little concerned, so i just pulled it off completely. I'll be putting a stock carrier and such on for now, until i'll have time to build my own carrier.

ORvCLuE.jpg

The holes now left in the body are another unsightly thing. I guess once the welder is up and running, i can patch them up and see if i can find some paint to at least touch them up. Also, anybody know how to remove this super old sticker?

Picked up a stock license plate carrier from TCSTARK, which i cleaned up real quick and installed. Tire Carrier will necessitate a bit more cleaning and painting and such, but i should have that done soon. Just need a working spare tire now :hillbilly:
WwSxDbP.jpg

Yesterday, i started going through the cooling system. It's definitely seen better days, and i've already flushed it twice, but it's no good. Replaced all the hoses, picked up the kit from
as well as a Gano Filter.

1E0ofbv.jpg

Also replaced the Thermostat and assorted gaskets. Seems like the Rubber Gasket on top of the Thermostat housing was askew, so water was pushing past. Maybe that explained the cold-running of the engine. We'll see.

The Gano filter is installed in the hose going from the thermostat to the top of the Radiator. All you do is cut a section of hose, remove a bit, and insert the filter. The Filter istelf acts like a trap for dirt and allows you a view into the cooling system. It can be washed out easily as well. Had them on my 1989 Jaguar XJS V12 as well, which helped a ton (Since that thing overheats like nothing else).
Hopefully the filter will catch some random crap floating around, so i can properly flush out the remainder later on.

3W60lL0.jpg

Sadly, i ran out of time yesterday (Why does it get dark at 4pm now?!?), so i have to burp the system today. Also found a little leak (Hose going into the radiator, you can see the puddle), so i'll fix that as well.

Well, that's just about it for right now. Still have more plans, but i'll have to fix the aforementioned things first before i can do those

Jakob, did Calico tell you I got those wheel studs off the other project vehicle last Monday?

Hey Mark, he did. However, i may need a few more parts than i expected from you...

The Death Valley trip turned out to be a rather expensive one :censor:

Driving 3 hours without a windshield is not recommended.

More tomorrow, once i can properly asses the damage :bang:

Odd way to park.

You have got a LOT of typing to do! You can't post a picture like that without DETAILS!

You do know yoyokid and I were in Panamint Valley last weekend as well, right?

Well, Calico, Morgan and a few other people were going out on a Death Valley, Ballarat trip from Sunday to Wednesday.
I had a few things to do on Sunday, including finishing up the Cooling system in the 40, so i was going to join them out in Ballarat on Monday. Got up early to make it out there by 9am. Could not find them, so i waited down there for a few hours and fixed a small leak in the radiator (Rocky saved me on that one. He had some Water Weld that did the trick).

After a few hours, i thought i'd go into the hills and see if i can find the guys. If not, i'd just turn around and head home.

Went up a bit, then down into a canyon. After a while of tight tracks, i found a spot to turn around, since i had not seen anybody. On the way down, i crossed a little stream again, got too far to the left bank (The rock face), and managed to find the single rock that was protruding into the road a bit. Not expecting any major rough trails, i didn't have a Hulk grip on the wheel, which then jerked out of my hand, hard left, which was that little bit too much.
As i'm rolling over, a fair bit of cussing in german was happening.

Once landed and stationary, i turned everything off, unbuckled myself and exited the 40 through the no-more-existent Bestop Top. More cussing ensued.

Made sure i had all the leaks under control and got all the gear out. Attempted to move the truck on my own with my hi-Lift and winch for a while, but it just wasn't happening in that canyon. Loose rock to the left and shrubs to the right. Mud on the ground.

My one lucky encounter of the day ensued. Morgan, one of the guys i was supposed to meet, who was also carrying a few people from france who were visiting, was the person coming up the canyon, apparently looking for me. If they wouldn't have found me, it would've been one looooong walk back to Ballarat...

After a few failed attempts to recover (My vehicle was the only one with a winch), they headed back down to look for more help.

A few minutes later, a couple of guys who were still camping at Ballarat showed up. They were driving their FJ Cruiser with winch, and added enough muscle and 4x4 knowledge to turn the truck sideways and then winch it on its side. At that point, it was starting to get rather dark, so i hopped in the poor 40 and rolled down the canyon to our camp spot for the night.

Next morning, or rather, today, i went though the truck to see what the general damage was. Pulled the top, checked the fluids, topped off what i could. Once she had enough fuel in the lines and to the carb, she started up and ran great. Kicked the windshield out, since it was pretty much done for and i couldn't fold the screen down.
Packed up all my stuff and headed back out to Ballarat to see if i could find my helpers and, again, say thanks and offer them a drink in town. Sadly, hey were gone. They did film the putting-it-back-on-its-wheels part, though, so we may see a video somewhere :flipoff2:

Anyway, Calico actually escorted me back home, cutting his trip short. I owe him big for that one.

Went to Tronas to see if they had some Transmission oil or a shop, but they had nothing, so we pushed on to Ridgecrest. Managed to find a shop that could top off my Transmission and T-Case fluids (Did not bring any with me, and it was most definitely leaking out). Grabbed some chow, and then headed on back home, down to Glendale.

Aside from my now permanently wind-formed face and a few bangs a bruises, i got away relatively clean. The Factory roll bar and 3-Point belt saved me for sure, otherwise i'd probably not be here now. I got majorly lucky, something i'd rather not like to repeat.

Now, the one thing that really hurt me, my truck, will get as much love as i can throw at it again. Hopefully she won't stay mad at me for smashing her face in :o
