I have some newb questions about the 70 series.

1. How many 70s are estimated to be in the USA?
2. When did the 70 series start production?
3. Where is decoder ring for all the call letters for all the possible 70 series combinations?
4. Is ist available in turbo diesel convertible with cable lockers?

1. who knows, alot more than people probably think.
2. I think production was some time in 84 so that '85 was the first model year.
3. the decoder rings are expensive like all cruiser parts

1) I started a registry to address this question- it's a sticky now- read it
2) Nov. 1984 production began
3) I refer to Wes
4) Kind of a vague question- Yes, as Wes said, but good luck getting one registered in the States until 2010. No OEM Canadian models meet this criteria
 
1)I'm guessing 146. The were only 664 brought to Canada plus the mine trucks and the recent used imports
2)Asked and answered
3)Engines. 3B, 13BT, 2H, 1HZ, 1HDT, 1VD, 2F, 3F, 1FZ, 22R, 2LT, 1KZ
Bodies, 70, 71, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79
Mix and match the above two lines and you get.
BJ70, BJ74, HZJ75, VDJ79 etc ect
4) The only cable locker convertable (removable hardtop)I know of with a TD is the BJ74. The ragtops all were plain jane as far as I know. (even manual steering)
 
Best for what? wheeling, transporting people, transporting supplies, etc.

Personally, my 2 favorite are the bj74 and the hzj74. I do like the hzj77 too. I may sell the 80 to get one of those for the fam. I have limited experience with the 3 of them though.

That's easy.

Divide the biggest tire you can fit with no lift by how much boost can you run without damaging your head. Convert the result to metric.

There's actually no answer to that question otherwise Toyota would have just made one.

Narrow it down a bit by answering the following and I'll tell you my suggestion.

1)Short, med, or long wheelbase?
2) 2 doors 4 doors or pickup?
3) Gas or diesel? I think you already said diesel
4) Has to be removable top right?

BJ70 came in a rag top (Short WB)
BJ74, HZJ73 came in a removable FRP top (med WB)
BJ75, HJ75, HZJ75 Came in a removable steel top pickup (long WB)

about 15 years ago i could count the number on one hand.....today...i dont have enough fingers and toes :)

i would honestly high est. 50 ?

I am interested in the BJ73 and BJ74. LHD. With AC.

What countries were these sold in?

Most countries in Central and south America. Notable exceptions are Mexico and Venezuela (only gas models).

I've seen 70 series in Costa Rica, Hounduras, Panama, Ecuador, Argentina, and Chile. But it does seem that Spain is the go to place for clean units. German ones are cheaper, but have rust issues.

Cruisers down here are work horses .. getting from little to 0 love .. despite the fact 73 and 74 are not really popular cruisers down here .. ( expensive configuration with no real work use .. more a recreational cruiser .. )
 
No one mentions the PZ70 with the 5 cylinder diesel motor sister to the HZ.
Not native to North America but they are out there driving around both in Canada and rumors of a few in the USA
