VEHICLE IS SOLD.

Selling a 1964 FJ40.

HISTORY:
Purchased this FJ40 in 1995. It has been garaged since I purchased it.
I did a complete frame off rebuild on this vehicle which was completed in 1997. This FJ40 was built for my wife and she used it mainly for 4WD trips from 1997 to about 2004 but over the last 6 years it has gotten very little use. We have too many vehicles including another FJ40 and we are building a FJ45 so this 40 is just going to continue to get used very little by us so, we have decided to sell it.

Price: SOLD
Location: Yuba City, CA (about 40 miles north of Sacramento)
Contact: Please send PM or email through this forum for initial contact if interested. If you are serious I will provide phone or other contact info.

There is some rust showing in several areas.

new picts yet

I may be interested in your 40....looks nice and sounds like it has the mods I want. Any more picts of the ext and int yet? Jeff

Sounds good, look forward to it. Also I live in Shingle Springs near Placerville and would like to see it if possible. Let me know if you have any time available. Jeff

Thanks Georg!

I did not get pictures of the soft top and doors. Again, this cruiser comes with a besttop softtop and full soft doors as well as the 1/2 doors pictured. Also comes with front driver and passenger floor mats and rear floor mat. These are cut from truck bed liner material.

The rear brakes were just rebuilt and are working very well. This cruiser stops so well with the front disc/rear drum setup that I did not convert the rear to disc. This cruiser has a better pedal feel to me than our other 40 with 4 wheel disc.

Any questions, let me know.

Thanks for looking.

Mike

Thanks for the bump guys.

Its true that I have a lot more into this Fj40 than I'm asking and that includes doing 95% of the work myself. The only labor I paid for was for the transmission rebuilding.

The cruiser has always been garaged and it has been well maintained, runs well, always seems to get attention wherever it goes.

Still don't think its worth what I'm asking? make an offer :)

I live in Medford, OR and am interested in your rig. It looks good but I need more explanation on condition of mechanics such as engine compression, drivetrain, estimated HP, torque, and what general condition running gear is in. Does it run well at low and high altitude? I did Rubicon years ago with my six cylinder and some of the V8s did not run well at that altitude. Please explain where the rust is located and how bad it is. When you did tub off in mid '90s did you have to repair any sections, etc... Does it drive straight on highway or wonder?

Thanks for your info.............

Sorry for the delay to reply. I've been very busy. I'll try to answer all of your questions.

I've never run a compression test on this engine. I've never had a reason to run one. The engine runs good at sea level and we have had it up to 10,000 ft elevation on the Dusy Ershim trail and it runs fine. Like all carb'ed engines, they will run richer as elevation increases. The quadrajet carb is probably the best carb for a v-8 powered cruiser for good driveabaility both on the trail and off. I purchased the quadrajet carb on this cruiser as a new carb from Edelbrock. I have a manual choke on the carb so you can control positively when it is on or off. I've had problems with automatic chokes at altitude and with cold weather so I made the manual linkage to solve that issue.

As mentioned in the description, the engine has low mileage. The odometer is not working so I can not tell you the exact mileage on the engine. My best guess is less than 30k miles. It is probably far less than 30k. I would estimate that my wife has driven it about 50 miles per year over the last 5 years. And then prior to that, it was driven less than 2,000 miles annually.

The engine was rebuilt with all new or reconditioned parts. New parts included:
pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, timing chain and gears, cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers, soft plugs, gaskets, heads, and head bolts

Reconditioned parts were the block, crank and rods

Other new items were:
intake manifold, exhaust manifolds (headers), valve covers, fuel pump, water pump, alternator, power steering pump, belts, hoses, thermostat, radiator, carburator, distributor, spark plugs, plug wires, coil

All machine work was done by a local shop.

I spent about $5,000 on the engine.

Not sure what specifics you want to know about the drivetrain. Its in good condition, low miles, and is very reliable. Orion transfer case was installed about a year after the Orion came out. The Transmission was completely rebuilt about 5 years ago by a local transmission rebuilder. I've had several transmission rebuilt by this shop and trust their work. I personally would have no concerns taking the 40 cross country or on the Ribicon trail, or both.

Estimated horse power: I have no idea but conservatively should be 350, maybe higher.

Yes, drives straight down the highway. But like any sprung over 40 or other high cener of gravity short wheel base vehicle you do have to pay attention when driving it. Ruts or irregulatities in the road can still cause it to move around. My wife had no problems driving it to trails like the Rubicon or Dusy Ershim. Those are about 100 miles and 300 miles away from where we live.

I tried to show pictures of all the rust spots. There is paint bubbling in the rear tub at the corners of the swing gates. There are some paint bubbles on the windhield vent. There is some rust showing on top of the inner fender well.

I did have to cut out a few small sections in the 90s. The tub was stripped of paint, repairs made, then repainted. The rear sections had some repairs done by brazing by a PO. This was there when I purchased the cruiser and it looked solid so I do not cut this out and replace it. I belive that this is where the paint is bubbled in the rear corners.
