63" chevy's on a fj60?

I have not looked at this thread in a bit... Since I first suggested skipping the 1/2 tons :)

Even under a minitruck, the 1/2 tones are too soft unless you only use the rig empty.

The 3/4 ton spring are great... they ride as soft or softer, carry more load and flex tons better.... as to the comments/questions several posts back about why we think they are better (besides the proven use...), they may have fewer leaves, but the extra length is what does the trick. Not to mention the ability to easily find appropriate additional leaves to add if need be... I am getting ready to put 1 tons under both ends of my '40... just pulling and then adding leafs until I get it tuned the way I want it.

Hi All:

O.K. - I'm a bit confused here. My understanding is that stock SWB 70 Series rear leaf springs are ~ 42 inches in length. How can one fit 63 inch long leaf springs with only a 2 inch longer shackle??

Thanks.

Alan

Hey-
I run these 63" 3/4 ton springs on my 85 BJ70. I run them spring under with a 2" longer than stock shackle. They work really nice, my rig is a daily driver. I do run the overload. On a 60 I would consider a spring over with these springs in the rear with a stock length shackle. Check out OpenX. They make spring hangers and shackles which will work with these springs, they are stout and a good price. I am thinking about spring over in the rear of my 70 going with a shorter shackle and still running spring under in the front.

Hey Mark,

Thanks again for steering me correctly in my old thread. The 3/4 tons are great!

Here are some old pics I took of them back in the day. They are working very well and I have no regrets about the conversion.

With that being said, I think, like Mark said I will be adding a leaf just because I have started carrying more weight on longer trips.

Hey Mark,

What do you use for add a leafs? Do you pull apart other Chevy springs or have you had good luck with any aftermarket leafs?

Thanks,

Dylan

Have your 3/4t springs lost some arch over time?

when I use chevy springs, I use additional chevy leafs. I am not looking for the kind of lift that the chevy truck guys are, so simply adding OEM chevy leafs in (or back in) seems to work real well.

I have not played with the chevy springs as much as I am sure some others have. But the few I have used have been a nice mod.... as much as I hate to say to :)

63 Chevies 5 thin leaf pack

Hey all, here is what I picked up. 5 standard leaves, no overload. Has anyone used or run these? I think they came off of a Suburban 1500. Do you know?

Thanks,

Jeremiah

I just put a set like that under a 4runner... they had an upper and lower overload originally, but I removed them and just used the 5 leafs. they work great under the 4runner. Maybe a tiny bit firmer than ideal... they are perfect under a '60.

Cool, thanks for the response! I will get them under sometime this year I hope!

Jeremiah

I would not venture a guess as to how chevy may have configured all of the various models, weight ratings and years of trucks that you might find springs from. :)

I am putting the 54 inch springs under my 40 at them moment. Two sets that are identical with 8 main leafs but one has an upper and a lower overload and the other has only a lower overload. I have no idea the exact trucks these came out of, I just found springs that were the same (I am loosing the overloads and some of the leafs anyway) .

So what do you guys running 63s in the rear do for your fronts? New to cruisers and mine at completely flat and front are almost negative.

Whoa, old thread, oldest I've seen dug up in a while.

I'm running FJ60 rear springs up front with 3/4t 63" springs in the rear. Works very well and rides great!!

What length shackles are you running?

Check out the build thread in my signature, circa spring 2014. I don't remember offhand.
