What do you do if your drums are SOL? I'll do some snooping about drum relining, but I can't believe I'm the first to travel this goat path...

First of all, Chris, welcome to MUD, and especially the insane world of FJ25s!! :D :D

We're all dying to see lots of pics of your new acquisition. (As Cruiser_Nerd would say, we're all heavy into FJ25 "Cruiser porn.") If you're having any problems posting pics as a "Rookie," let us know and we can get them posted for you for the time being.

As far as the brake drums go, you can either do what FoxFab said about seeing if you can get them relined/resleeved, or keep hanging out here to see if someone has some "swappable merchandise." Half of all our 25s here are built from each other's parts.

Then again, you could always do what Cruiser_Nerd and LivingInThePast do . . . . buy a half dozen 25s just to make one. :D

Once again, welcome aboard. It's great to have the 25 represented from all four corners of the country, and let us know what we can do to help with your new buddy.

Hmm, sounds like you have an oddball one like John with the glass fuel filter on it. The more of these I see, I wonder if mine is incorrect.
Mine has the standard glass bowl fuel filter on it, too. Is that the one you're talking about, Mike?

The shift lever (floor shift) is broken somewhere below the threads for the knob.
The shift levers are pretty long on these things. Is there enough length left below the original threads that it could be re-threaded on the remaining end of the lever?

The front brake drums are supposedly worn beyond spec (so they can't be turned again :frown: ) and pull hard to one side.
Just to forewarn you, the drums alone may not be the only cause of any brake problems on the 25. Scope out the thread on "25 Master Cylinders" (and other brake frustrations  ):

Not to discourage you, but your "brake fun" may just be beginning.

Welcome Chris! Don't worry about no one having picked it up earlier......it just had to find the right new owner. ;)

If you look, you'll see similar posts about Fox's and mine......both of ours had been in the classifieds a looong time before someone was willing to take up the challenge. :D

I'll second that...Chris, I have to tell you I was looking your rig over and thinking thoughts, but I never touched her! I didn't buy because she runs, and things tend to wither and die in my garage...but I do have some parts!

I guess I forget how old you are and how easy you forget things. It's Phil (FJnotCJ) and Jim (Cruiser_Nerd) that have had at least seven 25s. I only have four not six, at least not yet. Oh and welcome Chris. This is the best place for imformation about the Fj25s. But as far as I know it's the only place. So I guess that best place doesn't mean to much:rolleyes:

John

Chris, where are you?

Did you get your new FJ25 home yet? All set with drums?

Any pictures? The more FJ25's we see, the more mysteries we solve......................er,

..............the more mysteries we uncover. :)

Here I Am

Sorry for the slow reporting, but I have only minor progress to report. And no pictures, yet, but I'll take some to post this week.

I got the beast home under it's own power, and it runs fairly well. It made it home on a Sunday, in the rain without wipers ;p and a 2 foot long exhaust "system" with no muffler.

First thing was to change the engine oil, since I have no maintenance history. This led to the discovery that the original canister filter had been removed and replaced with... NOTHING . I don't know how long it's been driven unfiltered, but I'll try to keep it rolling. I ordered a spin-on conversion kit from SOR, which I got this week. I'll remove the oil pan this weekend and survey the damage.

I bought some usable bucket seats from a mid 70's fj40 to replace the mildewed, ratty cloth buckets in it now. However, I just found some 60/40 bench seats that I hope to buy soon for a more appropriate fit.

There's more gnashing of teeth to come, but I'm late for work.

Til next time

DOH! Call SOR up and cancel ther order!
The newer canister filters work fine and look almost stock and filters are still readily available from Toyota.. SOR sells used ones that are in really nice shape.

Ahh, but the novelty wears off very fast. :D

Glad you made it home Chris, get that oil changed and that filter on. If you still have the idiot light for oil pressure get a cheapo gauge, cross your fingers and see if you have good oil pressure. I'd say they probably popped a oil line in the past and just bypassed it to save buying a hose. :D

I remember the days of driving 'em home.........sounds like you had a good trip. :)

A little late for that. I got the package yesterday. To be clear, the entire filter housing was gone. There are just short screws, wrapped in teflon tape, threaded into the bosses on the block.

As much as I want to keep it stock, I have to believe that a spin-on filter system is more reliable and easier to maintain. Besides, there are more pressing issues for me... LIKE BRAKE DRUMS!!

By the way. Can someone tell me what my oil pressure numbers should be? There's an aftermarket gauge in my Cruiser, but I don't know if I should cry or rest easy when I look at it.

Chris , for the helofit pop off your valve cover and fire it up at idle, see if your getting a good stream of oil. Get an engine manual for an f engine, check to make sure your oil pressure regulator on the side of the block is clean inside, the book will tell you how to make sure it is within specs. I can look up oil pressure tomorrow. John Pardi
