Wow. A little more controlled heat should make it even run a little better.

You replace it with a TEQ thermostat?

Yep. And it didn't have the 4 bolt gasket.

It was all crusty. Like white crust from a battery.

I should flush this system I guess.

What's the best method? How much anti freeze I need? Brand? It hasn't had Toyota in a billion years I'm sure.

Truly "flushing" it can be a pain. Never drained a 6 cyl before, but I'm sure it's got block drains on it like the V8s. Drain the radiator and then drain the block. Like you said, it hasn't had Toyota coolant in it in a long time, but I'd still mix whatever your owner's manual calls for (prolly Toyota long-life, NOT super long-life) with distilled water and let it go. It'll almost certainly be better that what's in there now, since most people don't go to the trouble of mixing quality coolant with mineral-free water. I'd also add a bottle of Redline Water Wetter before you refill.

There is a block drain on the drivers side.

The green stuff is fine. @beno wouldn't even sell me the red, said it was a waste of $$$.

I usually just remove the clamp from the lowest end of the lower radiator hose and remove the radiator cap then pull the hose. Replace the hose (without clamp) and refill with fresh water, run for a minute or two, repeat a few times. When you think you have most of the crud out, mix a decent brand (I like Prestone) green 50/50 with distilled water and refill.

I'm sure there are better ways but I wouldn't want to spoil that ol 2F.

I drained and filled my 2F about 10 times before it ran clear. Lots of patience.

I used just water during that process then when it looked decent did a 50/50 with distilled water not tap.

The last time I did it I removed the thermostat and stuck the garden hose into the thermostat housing using a towel for a gasket and just kept running the water until it was clean

Two full strength should do it. They sell a pre-mix 50/50 too. I you go that way I would guess three should do it.

Started w/ Zerex green when we got the 80 and switched to NAPA Original Green stuff when Zerex got harder to find - over 230K on those w/o a problem

Did Mr T put a nipple with the drain block on the 2F?

They did this in the 2UZ and it makes it a mess free job using a rubber hose. Simple and genius

Not that I can remember. I seem to remember having to get an allen wrench into the worst possible spot that only miniature hands can get to. I did all that work and it was pretty anti-climactic as nothing drains out of that hole. It's more like a vent hole that allows the block to drain better out through the bottom radiator hose.

No they didn't. When I changed the radiator on the LS430, it has a nipple and the new one even came with a piece of hose.

You could change it in a suit and not get dirty. I guess that's the idea.
