I think we'll find out as soon as they start hitting the trails with lifts and tires. If it can't handle the traction/torque/weight with 35s (the size I think will be the standard size everyone swaps for off-road) we'll find out quick. Haven't seen Tacomas blowing up diffs yet - so that's a good sign.

I didn't break my 8.2 in 8 years. Im still amazed I never broke a front axle either. I wouldn't have believed I could hammer on the little clamshell as hard as I did and not break it. I bought 2 spare shafts and 2 spare front diffs initially when I got it and never used them. I was proven wrong. So I'm probably wrong here too. 🤷🏼
The TFL people broke the front diff on their new Tacoma the first time off road.

Geez. Brand new vehicle in the slippery snow on unchallenging terrain

Isn't it part of the differential?
It's not a part that will be on any AWD models. Is only on part time. But they've never really said what happened. It's a slide collar that connects the intermediate shaft and the differential side gear.

But it's also something that shouldn't break. I've never heard of a broken collar in any previous generation. So it's either a new part that is weak and we'll see a bunch of failures or it's an early production part that was flawed. Hard to know.

I am pretty clueless on mechanical things, but it appears the fix was a new front differential according to this video. See the invoice.

They replaced the whole differential so they could take it back to Toyota and thoroughly test what went wrong with the ADD and diff as a complete unit.

If the diff grenaded, it would have sounded like a box of rocks tumbling around (which is not what happened)

I have a 2016 5th Gen 4Runner Limited that my wife daily drives with 54k miles on the clock. We were thinking of replacing it with a LC250 with all the more modern creature comforts (First Edition seemed to fit the bill). Our local dealer was asking $19k over SRP. WTF&^%%$##%^.

We visited the dealership, sat in the vehicle, talked to the rep and quickly decided...$19k over SRP is absolutely crazy!!! Good luck selling it.

Dealer reduced markup to $10k...not going to happen! Unfortunate that the markup is so obscene. New plan...keep the 5th Gen 4R.

And I still have my 87 FJ60 with 147k on the clock. No bells or whistles but a reliable low tech beast.
You could also get a lightly-used GX460, particularly a 2022 or 2023 with the updated interior. Same chassis as your T4R, but a V8, extra gear in the transmission, more creature comforts, and more sound deadening. With how high used T4R prices are, total "cost" to upgrade to a GX would likely be insignificant and you'd be able to easily add some mods and improve the aesthetics.

The thing about dealer mark-ups on the LC250 First Edition is that Toyota is only making a limited number of them. When they’re gone, they’re gone — and the price will go up even more due to rarity/collectors item.

I don’t think anyone is ever going to get a First Edition at MSRP.

I just saw markups on some Land Cruiser trim with the premium package.

Buying US gold eagles may be a better investment than a $10k markup on a LC250. But, they will be gone when they are gone....so true.

I think long term they may hold value slightly better than the other LC250 trims but I dont believe they are going to appreciate in value at all. These arent limited run exotic sports cars, they are largely an aesthetic trim package and I dont think there is enough added substance drive value up.

There's also a ton of them

Let's get the Bronco4G folks over here to talk about the value of the first year bronco and how much it will be worth in 30 years as a barn find. I will dead by then and gas maybe $60 gallon. Minimum wage will be $200 hr and the Bronco will worth $200-300K. They may even have an electric conversion for it.
