5l injection pump wiring questions (1 Viewer)

Alright, well I made great progress with my other projects yesterday and if my timing is fully mechanical the truck should be ready to test drive a bit today. Anything I should be listening out for or paying attention to in regards to the timing functioning correctly? Obviously precombustion knock will be a major red flag, but anything more subtle? Will retarded timing have any obvious symptoms or just poor performance?

When too far advanced, it will make a lot of knocking and even white smoke if it's really bad. Power will be down obviously.

To far retarded it be very quiet almost like a gas engine. Harder to start if the base timing is retarded. And power down again.

So if it where me, I'd just check that as the rpms increase, the sound stays fairly consistent and does not get too quiet. Much like how your 2LT engine was.

With stock 5L fuel setting your power will be the same or less than your old 2LT. So don't expect lots of power until you've tuned it.

Does your injection pump have a altitude compensator? Are you applying boost to it? I'm not sure how the compensator needs to be adjusted when going from an altitude to boost compensator, but worth looking it up. The position of the fuel pin, and spring resistance etc. is critical to your power curve.

Alright, well I took it out for a short drive yesterday. Im starting conservative so I only went a couple of miles around the nieghborhood. Probably topped out at about 40mph and never gave it more than half throttle. So far, so good. My power feels pretty consistent. Seemingly comparable or a maybe a bit better than my 2lt. Hard to really tell for sure till Ive floored it though. No knocking or dead spots or quiet spots.Definitely not quiet at all, as Ive temorarily set up a super short straight pipe for my exhaust. My new mandrel bends should show up today.

Tuning the pump and boost compensation are a whole nother set of projects ive got slated for this week when Ive finished my exhaust and had time to do all the reading i need to do to tune it right. From what Ive read I should be able to bolt up my old boost compensator from the 2lt but Ill have to confirm that since I seem to have a different pump than most of the 3l's and aussie 5l's. I dont believe i have an altitude compensator.

One thing I have noticed so far is the turbo spools up fine but doesnt seem to lose rpms as quickly as I would expect. You can hear the turbo continuing to whine on for an extra couple of seconds as you coast up to a stop sign or whatever. Im not sure if this is necessarily a bad thing, or if that will change when the pump is tuned properly, but im not sure whats going on there.

Be very careful when you swap the boost compensator from your old pump to the new one. The seal there should probably be replaced...it is the most likely one to dry up and leak. Be careful to not stretch or damage the springs underneath which are connected between the pump components and boost compensator components. And of course do not let any debris fall in there. Probably would have been an easier job before the engine went into the truck....

Not sure what to say about the turbo. My guess is it's fine. Post a video maybe if you are really concerned?

So I did an experiment with the TCV today while I was measuring my timing advance. Im not 100% sure it proved anything but it could be meaningful info.

My timing advance at TDC measured .62mm. I hooked up my battery jumper and used it to click the TCV on and off a bunch of times. No change in the timing advance.

Now the TCV in the electronically controlled pumps might rely on the fuel pressure to move the plunger-roller back and forth, so Im not 100% sure that this is a meaningful index of functionality. The engine might have to be running for the TCV to make any change, even on a fully electronically controlled pump.

In any case, after multiple 15+ minute test drives my TCV still clicks on and off (i.e. hasnt burned out) so if nothing else, that seems to confirm its more of a fuel cut solenoid on this pump and functions differently than the 2lte/5le TCV's that supposedly burn out if left on 12v.

Good day, can someone please help me, I am looking for the spill valve solenoid for a Toyota 5L-E engine I think the part number is Denso 098300-0200.

Heres what Im looking at btw.

Timing control valve has a red dot.
rpm pickup has a blue dot.
the lead wire for fuel solenoid has a green dot.

Looking at the way the fuel cut solenoid and TCV hook up to the same pig tail i would presume they both get a constant 12v positive. But being on a pinned pigtail the TCV could be getting some sort of different signal or source...

Hoping to receive this thread for help with my 5L going into my 96 Hilux. Old 2LTE pump is electrical, I assumed new pump was mechanical but it has this plug.
