I've searched until I'm blue in the face. Last night I ran into an acquaintance and while we were discussing my build on my mini, I told him I was going with 5.29s when I install the ARBs. He said I don't need 5.29s, 4.56s or 4.88s will be great. Plus he said I'm gonna have to grind the housing out quite a bit to make the 5.29s fit and I'll snap the pinion off first thing.

He's a hardcore j33per and has wicked fab skillz, but does he know wtf he's talking about here?

This rig will be my DD and get a lot of trail time. I don't wheel as hardcore as some of you, because we don't have the terrain here, but I'll be trailering it to Colo/Utah/Cali/etc for the really fun stuff. What say Mud?

Truck specs: 4.3L Vortec, R150F trans, marlin dual ultimate crawlbox 2.28 and 4.7, Longs up front, chromoly rear axles, 36-40" tires. The 5.29 Yukons are already sitting in the garage, keeping the ARBs happy.

What he's talking about is gears for a bigger displacement motor and a torque curve that is different than ours. Most of the guys here have stock motors so we use a "rule of thumb".

31^ = 4.3? - 4.56
33s = 4.88s
35's = 5.29s

:confused:

For the gears, I'd use a gear calculator. If you know what final drive you have now you can either lug it w/ higher gears or install a lower set to get the revs up. Factory is what I like and the one I'd use.

And as far as the axles are concerned, I'd listen to Toyota guys not Jeap guys they really are two completely different sets.

:confused: I'm assuming he's using a blanket theory and basing it on Dana 30's and old 44s. :rolleyes:

:lol: there is a D30 hop up kit. Spend any time on a Jeap forum and you'll see it's a waste of money....i.e THEY SUCK!!

IMO 80-90% if not more Jeaps came w/ the D30 so that's the blanket theory I'm talking about.

jeep guys are used to breakin stuff.

run Precision gears in the 5.29 flavor.

i searched pirate for a few hours a week ago and came to the conclusion that the best gears are made by precision.

there was talk of yukon made crappy gears a while back, then switched thier supplier to i think precision.

so if you have an old set of yukons trade em for new precision gears.

this is what I will be running here soon enuff. now I have 35" tires, my goal is 37 or 39. depends on what deal I get

With tires that big, I also concur that you should be running 5.29's.

Plus he said I'm gonna have to grind the housing out quite a bit to make the 5.29s fit and I'll snap the pinion off first thing.

This is the part where your Jeeper buddy doesn't know WTF he's talking about. That's total crap.

For what it's worth. I had a 4.3 TBI, R150, Marlin duals w/ 2.28 and 4.7 and 35" tires. I ran 4.88's and the speedo was nearly spot on and the engine was very happy. If you go bigger, consider 5.29's, but ONLY if you cryo them. Otherwise, 4.88's are the way to go for this setup, IMHO.

Thanks, fellas. This has generated some good discussion. Most likely I'll be running 37" MTRs or Toyos, not for sure.

Anyway, as always, Mud wisdom from respected members prevails. 5.29's it is. Wristy, any idea how long ago Yukon switched to precision? Mine were ordered last month, so they haven't been here long.

If it were a Toyota engine then the 5.29's are the norm for your tire size but the 4.3 has a lower rpm power band than the toyota engines. If you were gonna us an automatic I would say got to 4.88's but since your sticking to a Toyota 5spd I'd stick to the 5.29's. I also like Precision Gears

Also, just and FYI. Yukon gear will void your warranty if you use any tire larger than 35". They have it posted right on their website.

Yukon Gear & Axle. Warranty Information.

37's and 529 are great with that motor

I'd get the torque curve and since it's a DD, run it alittle sleepy. I tried looking but could not find it.

Those 4.3s are awesome pulling motors and since you have a granny gear you'll have no problems getting your mass up and running....i.e off the line. No point in that motor turning the revs a Yota would be....

EDIT, just noticed you DON'T have the granny gear...:whoops:

I love the 5.29's in my 4cyl truck but with the extra power from the 4.3 the 4.88s should work good. If anything you don't want to overgear it and put extra stress on the drivetrain.

350 and 4:11s! :flipoff2:

I have seen many hardcore mini guys run 4:88's with no issue. I think there is a LITTLE grinding on a cruiser but I am not sure on the Mini's And I think as you go up the axles get weaker...but dont quote me on that.

I've got Longfields up front and aftermarket chromolys in the rear. Pretty sure that's not gonna be the weaklink.

awww hell no!!

Amen, brutha!!!!!!!!!!:cheers:
