Yes, it's official: 4WD Toyota Owner will be entering our Toyota FJ Cruiser in the SCORE Baja 500 in June 2007 in Class 3!

We have put together a killer team of Scott Brady, Cain Smead and Mike Baker. Scott and Cain are Baja and race veterans who know the terrain and course very well. Mike is a 20-year ASE-certified tech who has worked on Toyotas ONLY for the last two decades. When something breaks, he can fix it!

This truck will serve double duty: both 4WD events, and of course the Baja 500! We will keep 4WD, and right after Baja we will take it on the Rubicon trail. It's going to prove that the FJ Cruiser can handle both worlds of speed and crawling equally well!

The real key is that this truck will be a bolt-on rig. No $20,000 axles that no one can really afford. We are going to equip our FJ Cruiser with the best off-the-shelf parts--All Pro Offroad, Total Chaos, Sway-A-Way, Mickey Thompson, IPF, and much more. ANYONE can replicate this without breaking the bank!

Click below for the basic web page showing our ever-growing list of sponsors and parts. Stay tuned to 4WD Toyota Owner mag for the action pics; I will also post spy shots here and on the web page. The truck had the Total Chaos long travel kit installed today at Demello Offroad. Next it's off to BK Fabworks for the roll cage, seats, fuel cell etc.

Click here for info and get your butts to Ensenada come June to see the 4WD Toyota Owner FJ Cruiser take on all comers!

Wow another FJ racer:) look forward to the build up.
Why not run with the other FJ's in the stock mini class?

We thought about that, but decided to up the ante a bit (for better or worse) and take it to Class 3. Better start time helps a bit, too. It'll be a wild ride with the level of competition, but...that will make any podium that much sweeter!

looks like a great truck! But to label it as a 'bolt on rig for everyone' is a bit out there. How much do you have in it by now with labor and parts? I guess close to 20 grand won't be too far off...

cheers,
J

Not quite, but I get your point. Consider though that the Ultimate Adventure FJC had a rear Dynatrac Pro Rock 60. A killer axle, true, but one that's about $4K, four thousand dollars JUST FOR THE SINGLE AXLE! No suspension, etc--just one single axle. Kinda mind blowing. To a lot of people, that's almost two month's salary for one axle.

What we're trying to convey is that these are not custom, one-off, hella expensive parts like those ridiculous three foot long shocks you see on desert buggies. With this project, you can call up All-Pro, or Total Chaos, or Sway-A-Way, or TRDParts4U.com, and order the stuff pre-made and off the shelf. The goal is to keep it in reach of the average wheeler--we'll see how it goes! We think we can do it!

I feel for you!! The new ish is at layout now and ships first of Jan!!

I got 1 question for you , can i have it when your done with it . Any ideas as to what color your painting it ?

David,

You are going to have a blast!! I raced in the baja 2000 in 2000. We took a modified fj80 built buy Donahoe racing. I can only imagine the fj cruiser with the extra horsepower and ifs. Good luck with the build. I may have to make the trip to the Takeover to check it out.

Heya Rob! (note to everyone--Rob's truck was on the cover of the very first issue of 4WD Toyota Owner!)

NO WAY. An FJ80?? That's insanely cool. Where is that truck today? How did you do? YES, come on out for the race, we'll give you a place of honor!

Not sure on color--yet. Any ideas?!

One question, why the MTZ Mickey Thompson Tires and not BFGoodridge, do you believe in the MTZ tires, or would it be a good marketing strategy!:o

Well that may be true, however since the BFG win most of the Baja races...:o
