Hey mud,

Couple of questions about the 4bt.

  1. What does it take to convert an industrial 4bt to road use?
  2. Is the front timing cover the same as a 6bt?
  3. Who makes a good rebuild kit?
  4. What us needed to reach 150hp with one of these? Looking for a stage 1 setup because I want to put one in a fat 80 on 35's.
Im sure I'll have more questions so I will keep this thread on going.

Thanks fellow obsessive's!

Are you planning on keeping the stock auto transmission?

I recently drove a 75-series Troopy with an Isuzu 4BD1T and was very pleasantly surprised by the power and hill climbing ability of the engine. It was stock with somewhere around 120-135hp, the Isuzu is smoother than a 4BT but otherwise fairly similar.

My plan was to use an nv4500. Seems to be the most straight forward transmission for that engine. In terms of the izuzu My argument would be parts availability. From my understanding the 4bt is a 6bt with two less cylinders. I.E all the front drive accessories are easily obtained etc.

That makes total sense, both from a service standpoint and for the aftermarket support. An NV4500 would be awesome, getting rid of the power sapping auto will transform the driving experience. It will also make wheeling more engaging and exciting.

Isuzu parts supply in the US is no problem at all. The engine was used in Isuzu and GM badged trucks, either dealer network has you covered. Biggest hassle with the Isuzu is gearbox adaption.

So I wouldn't be able to bring a pump to a shop and have is converted?

Thats a great thread I'll look into that. 200 horse would be perfect.

Worth asking.
