Im a 60 guy with a friend who is looking at a 40 on the island but is concerned about a decent source for parts.

This red 40 has got the 1F in her, 4 speed tranny, looks like a old warn winch, and a half-decent looking soft top.
(surprisingly no rust)
he's mostly looking for a decent source for hard top stuff, engine parts, and driveline bits.

Thanks guys!

Is this the red 40 on usedvictoria...
Depends on what parts he needs... but I usually don't have a hard time finding parts or upgrading parts... if u can't find a part on the island, usually u can get it from down south... just make sure they send it usps instead of ups to avoid duties...

As for the hardtop stuff.. can't help u there .. don't see to much for sale anymore...

I still have some stuff still kicking.. drives shafts and misc. Parts.. all my engine parts are 2f... h42.. lift springs..

Let me know if he needs something that I have...

Will do man, and yeah that is the one in question. We're looking at it tomorrow.

Any things to look out for?

Looks like he's going to go for it! Soon we'll have another member!

Only problem is that this 40 series has a welded rear diff, how hard is it to find replacement diffs on the island?

Right on!

Welded diff is perfect opportunity for a ARB locker replacement? :) I don't think it'll be hard to find a regular diff tho.

Parts are easy to find. I've lost count of the hardtop sides in my shed. Everyone has some portion of a poor old 40 in their barn.

Diffs are pretty much all the same for all old cruisers.

He might even like the welded rear if it isn't a dd. I wouldn't be in a rush to change it.

If you're gonna wheel it, run it for what its worth! Like Seapotato said, no rush to change it. Pop the cover and check the fluid/gears/weld for wear and go from there. Cheap and easy "Langford Locker".

This 40 is pretty interesting, its obviously seen some interesting kinds of wheeling (passenger forward body mount bent the fxxx up)
This was another interesting thing we found after picking it up, Looks like this is some wierd kind of shackle linkage? the arm goes to a bracket directly above the axle, and looks to bolt into the top shackle pin? We were thinking that it could be some way of increasing your droop in order for more articulation. Any suggestions?

We might be taking it out on sunday, going to see how this 40 wheels! :skull::skull:

You'd be right. That will allow for much more articulation/droop.

Best of luck. We've all got bits and pieces stashed in our 'barns'/rafters/crawl spaces.

Remember, 1F is the closest thing I've ever driven to a gas powered diesel. All the power comes from
the bottom, slowly. It is a fantastic low lugging engine. I pulled mine for a 351W, probably
not the best move I've made.

I ordered pertronix igniter 2 and a flamethrower 2 coil, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fresh tank of gas to get rid of the 15yr old gas, currently have prestone coolant flush treatment in that im gonna leave in for 2-3 days before draining to get ride of the rust build up. Guy only used water in it and let it sit there for that long with water. Atm it doesn't like to idle so you have to be on the gas to keep it running.

Bring it up island to Nanaimo this weekend for a wheel!

You going out next weekend too? Or should we do a little run on the southern part of the island? Dumpy40 and I know some really fun zones

Nice to meet you, Mike. I hope that works out for you. If its not good let me know, we'll sort it out.
Look forward to having you out on the trail with us. J
