How hard is it to do? I think you have done it, haven't you?
I've never imported...but Nick Stone of LSLC imported his BJ from Canada. A lot of guys in the diesel section are educated on the process. Just a few forms and fees...I think the logistics and the concern over importing a Rust Bucket or Basket Case are the big hurdles.
I did it a year ago. Bought a '76 diesel 55 in Vancouver and drove it back to Memphis.
By far the most difficult and frustrating part of the process was standing in line at the US side of the border crossing for 2+ hours while 2 customs agents waited on the line of people. Right behind them and in full view of the waiting line of people were about 40 more customs agents drinking coffee, eating candy, showing each other their handguns, laughing and telling stories and generally piddling away the time.
There were at least 20 "teller windows" that could have been manned, but were empty.
Worse than the DMV!

Drove it straight back. Awesome. Sounds like fun trip.
As soon as we got into the US, we stopped in Bellingham, WA and went to Harbor Freight and stocked up on tools for the expected repairs.
2600 miles and 48 hours later we pulled into MEM. The only thing we did to the pig on the whole way back was put diesel in it. Oh, and 2 qts of oil.
Got 25 - 26 mpg doing 70 on the way home.
My brother and his med school buddy were going to Vancouver for a conference, so I talked them into helping me drive back instead of flying back. It was a great trip and everything worked out nearly perfectly.

That's for dang sure!
It's very similar to what I'm aiming for, and I was awfully tempted when I saw it posted a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to stick with the plan, though. The education and experience is a big part of it for me.
