i've done some searching about the diesel swaps that have been completed in fj40s. but nobody really mentions a price. would i be able to swap in a diesel into my '77 fj40 for relatively the same price as rebuilding the original 2f? maybe a 1hz swap would be a good benchmark, considering the power is closest to the 2f.

I don't know what a 2f costs to rebuild. But if you want to go with a 3b diesel swap and can find a donor vehicle then the cost would be quite low.

Find a Bj60 with a H55f tranny and swap over all the goodies. Turbo it when you get the time. It can be turbo'd for under a grand if you do it yourself. many threads here on it.

A 3b will move a 40 just fine. 1hz would be powerful. A turbo'd 3b if it has the right turbo will be close in power to a NA 1hz. close.

i found two bj60's here in the lower mainland, one was being wrecked and the other was just priced really low. $900 still runs, rust. but both of them were 4 spd. i'm assuming this is the same h42 transmission i have in my fj40?

Input shaft will be different because of the B series engine. Trannies mated to H series diesels have the same input shaft as F series. Sooooo that means you will have to swap in an engine/tranny combo, but no worries because it will fit nicely...

After 18 mos+ with a 5 speed, I can't imagine going back. But maybe it's best not to ever experience one....

Of course I would buy the one that runs so you can verify condition. $900 CAD is cheap for a full donor vehicle. Grab it.

there's another bj60 on sunshine coast being wrecked, 2000 whole, obo for parts. it has a 5 spd. as for diesel life (sorry i really don't know jack about diesels) i know they run for a looong time. but would i have to worry about rebuilding an engine with 375,000 kms on it? would it be a good idea to do the rebuild at the same time as the swap?

Maybe. but 375 if looked after could still be strong.

Things a rebuild might be in order a couple years away or months. many of these engines have gone over 500k. The tranny might need an overhaul too. But the good thing if you get it for the right price is, you can overhual it to brand new cond and have an awesome truck for many years.

The 3b rebuild kit runs around 1.5k can, plus any machine shop labour. expect 3k min if you don't do much yourself.

Best part of a donar vehicle is you get all the elec harness with it. no shopping around for all that stuff.

aaah that sounds doable... i think that's the way to go, i wouldn't wanna swap it in and a year later have to pull it all and rebuild. i think i gotta get me some bj manuals. looks like 4wheelauto's gotta sale on those 3b kits, $1350 ain't too shabby!

If the donor was solid and you got to drive it, as well do a compression test. If it was good. You "should" be good for many many years. These are the toughest of the engines

I don't have a FSM handy. But it is much higher than a 2F. You should see numbers in the mid 350 psi figure. Or higher. 450........

I think the FSM says 285 min, and then an overhaul. But that would be a pretty bagged engine. Also I think there is a min between cyl. Something like 50 or 70.

Another thing you could do is a coolant pressure test. To see if the head has any problems.

Go for a trip to Canada and look at some donors.

ah ya i didn't mention that before, i'm here in bc, across the fraser river from vancouver. i look back at it now and don't really understand why i bought a gasser when i'm in the middle of diesel land.

Oh ya, I see in your location north delta..... funny I am so use to Merikans with Fj's looking for a diesel eng conversion LOL.....

So keep looking there may be a rough BJ40 or 42 you can buy. Then you have everything you need to make it work. Where as the Bj60 is going to have different driveshafts and all. Not sure how it works.

Or sell the fj and buy a bJ . No conversion needed.

I will most likely buy a JDM bj44 or a USA 40 hardtop for a diesel conversion. I like rust free.

I like the Bj44's Wayne has brought in. As well the Mustard Bj40 Honk bought. It was beautiful.

i definately don't wanna get rid of this fj40, it's totally grown on me in the past year since i got it. i use it as my daily driver as well as a toy to get me to all the good camping spots. i wanna keep it that way, just get a lot more miles to the gallon.

Done! I grabbed it. It runs very well, pulls strong, doesn't even rattle which is amazing as it is completely rusted out, bodywise.

I intend to convert my 40 one of these months. Should be a lot of fun.

Yep. That is number four for us. Fortunately, I have a large yard to hide a couple of extra LC's. Unfortunately, I have to build a proper garage to work on these things in.

It's all good though.
