Hmmm, good point. I assume then, that FJ62's are all stamped FJ62 on the frame/VIN tag, right? ...

touche',,, i dunno i'll go to the 60 section and ask.

edit: so far it looks like the 60/62 is in the vins for those respectively. but those vins start with a J and has the FJ60 or FJ62 in the middle with the numbers, so,,, it seems everytime i see a pig advertised as FJ56 it has japan mount style mirrors which is why i have always assumed the FJ56 was japan only and FJ55 was for export. who knows, but its fun to theorize.

Do pablo and me need to take this Q to the 40 series guys!!!

Yes.

FJ55 mirror hole spread is 1 3/4" or 1 13/16". I can't find my metric ruler.

One of the last mods that I did was put the 40 mirrors on my 55. I had them for a while, but finally got around to putting them on the day the pig was being picked up.

I like 'em.

Are the two upper holes the same distance apart as the originals, or did you have to drill new ones? It would sure be nice to pull the mirrors in on narrow trails.

interesting about the 55 56 thing... But do the 40 mirrors bolt right onto the 55 door using the two exsisting bolt holes on top and adding one for the third hole on the 40 mirror, or is it a complete cut and weld job? What are the centers distance of the two top bolt holes on the 40 mirrors?

My question exactly!

Yes.

FJ55 mirror hole spread is 1 3/4" or 1 13/16". I can't find my metric ruler.

OK, so what's the bolt distance on the mirror?

Anyone?

Hello?

It's like we're not supposed to know!?! 76 and later fj40 side view mirrors... bolt spacing? Anyone?

THANK YOU , Old FJ40! Way to save a thread! Looks like the blot might end up in the factory backing plate maybe. Just a drill and I wonder if I can get to a nut w/ the window up and the door panel removed. Now I just need a set of useable fj40 mirrors!

Nice tid-bit, Hicruise55!. I looked into my door today, and it looks like if I were to use the factory hole closest to the rear of the front doors, and drill the new hole closer to the front of the door, it will still be in the backing plate inside of the door. Pretty sure that I can get a wrench on the nut on the inside of the door w/ the window up and door panel off. This is probably one of the simplest/ most usefull mods I've seen for the pig. Good job guys!

Compairing my '89 FJ62 doors and the '78 doors on my FJ55 and the other 55's doors, the bolt holes are different as well as the vertical mounting point. At the bolt holes, the 55 mirror mount is vertical- on the 62 the top is sloped inwards to a degree that the (horizontal) top of the mirror would not be parallel with the ground...

I belive it WOULD work but not a bolt on... and they would look crooked without some mods- Aaron

thanks for adding that info.... since my brain is damaged now... thanks to the military.... my memory isnt as good.... im glad someone stepped in and made the comparison as suggested.

I just remember putting them on the passengers side of the 77 to see if they would work and what it would look like.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but due to the NLA of driver side mirror, I think I'm going to do the 40 mirror thing, even though I don't think it looks quite right. I saw that older 40's have round mirrors instead of rectangular, which I think would look a little better for the 55. I can find the round heads for under $25 at cruiserparts.net. Has anyone looked to see if those can be adapted to the budget stalks listed above (from man-a-fre or CCOT)?

thanks,

Geof

Not to be contrary, but I think the rectangular shape of the 40 mirrors is a compliment to the lines of the Iron Pig. ;)JMO
