4.88's or 5.29's?

Up until last year, I was under the impression that the only Landcruiser gears that you could get for the 9 inch axles were 3.7(ish), 4.1(ish), 4.56, and 4.88. I know you can get lower gears for the 8 hilux/minitruck. Did I miss something while I was buried in the books last year? Is this one of those BS stories that the slimy salesmen give you? "it won't fit.... period. ...... However, if you grind a little, then it'll fit."

Will the 5.29 gears fit without a locker?

I would just weld the spider gears for the locker, I have the spiders welded on my dana 70 in my 91 blazer and it works great.
I want to put a set of fj60 axles in my 90 toyota truck.

I've got 5.29s under my "little" '40. FF in the rear. Love them. You HAVE to match you tire size to you gearing. And with 39.5s the 5.29s are the appropriate choice. I would not put them in a SF axle. The picture above of the grinding for '4.88s is NOTHING compared to the amount of matertial that needs to be removed to fir 5.29s. At least 4 teeth will need to be ground. A LOT.

Locker or no locker doesn't affect it.

IIRC you have to grind a little with 4.56s too. But it has been a while since I but a set of4.56s in so my memory is not absolutely solid on this.

I really love the gearing of the 5.29s with the 39.5s. I really really like to push the gearing back down to stock equivilent. Or at least down to the equvilent of 30s or 31s on 4.11s.

I am watching to see how time and miles treat the SFs that guys have ground to fit 5.29s. I'd love to see that they wear okay with extended use and hold up to high stress moment.

Running 5.29s on my HJ with 38x13 XMLs and they seem plenty strong.

I replaced the birfs with smurfs and this is what I get. The dif seems fine.

Yup, I need to talk to Mr. Long about a custom long spline axle that will work with my cable lockers.

I fear what is the next thing in the line to break...I am guessing the pinion on those 5.29's...

Well if you read his website you can see that if you send your ring and pinions to him he'll CRYO them and make them stronger for you.

but I guess, Presision Gear, if theire know that the 5.29 pinion need to be more tough don't yhink in do a cryo process in it . ?
