Anyone out there changed their own timing belt? If so did you cranksfhat pulley put up a major fight while you were talking it off? I have had the torch on mine about 6 times with a harmonic balancer puller on it and it has only moved about one drive belt width. Around a 1/2 inch. I melted my #1 timing cover in the process.

I beleive I have approached this job as you should, removing the right pieces and what not, its just the damn pulley. If it wasent for this I would be done now.

thanks, -nate-

I really feel like an idiot on this one. Yes the pulley was rusted on pretty bad, but the toyota dealer did not give me the wrong belt. I have a very cluttered barn where I am building a engine right next to where I was working. I grabbed the belt for that engine by mistake. :whoops: Went to toyota dealer and had a good laugh when I realized I brought the wrong timing belt. I also ordered a new lower timing cover for a whopping 40 dollars. The harmonic balancer was 380 dollars, went to regular auto parts store and got it for 120.

One question. On the toyota belt it has marks for right and left cam. Is the right cam on the drivers side? or is it back wards?

thanks  -nate-

if not mistaken right cam is on passenger side.make sure after putting the belt on to turn the engine over by hand & recheck marks.i just rblt a 3.0 & it took me 4 tries to finally get everything lined up after tensioning

I hope you have a FSM to follow. If not, be VERY VERY careful with the tensioner!

You have to press the pin down into the tensioner and stick a nail into the hole to hold it compressed. If you try to just use the 2 bolts to compress the tensioner while cranking it into the idler, you will either strip the bolts, snap an ear off the tensioner, or strip out the hole(s) in the block.

good pointers, I have tried to get everything lined up twice now. But passenger side cam is always about 1 tooth off. And I am not even shure what marks I am trying to line up. There are indentations in the upper cam covers and white paint marks, which look like they were not placed with any accuracy. I am going for the indentations and its close, will go and try it again.

I think i got it. I have the belt tensioned and after 2 crank turns all marks lined up exactly. See that was time number 5. I think the next one will go alot better. Gotta love my 3f-e after that, no timing belt there, just 2 gears. Wonder when I will have to replace those.

Timing belt job is complete. The writeups I found on the internet were helpful, but no where near as complete as they should have been.

As for the runner, it dirves just as before so I guess I did not mess it up.

Could someone tell me how to dispose of engine coolent.

2nd gen- My land cruiser timing belt was a real pain to change, I couldent even find the damn thing. :grinpimp::censor:

thanks for the help guys, -nate-
