I hope someone will be so kind as to enlighten me as to just what is normal shifting behavior for a stock 67 3speed tranny. My question specifically is, when shifting down from 2 to 1, how slow does one normally need to go to get a flawless, noiseless shift? My 3 to 2 is perfect, but for 2 to 1 I need to be nearly to a dead stop or it will give me some chatter as the gears mesh. I can mimimize it somewhat by shifting while the motor is in decel. Anyway, is there somethign wrong with my first gear or is this normal?

Thanks peeple.

Is 1st gear synchro'd? If not you may need to double clutch when you make that shift.

Yep, first gear is not synchronized. Either double clutch or come to a full stop before shifting. I sometimes shift into reverse then first before starting off. Of course the slop in the column shifter is an issue all by itself...

bring the car to a complete stop.

Then double clutch into 1st.

The good thing is that the lack of synchro's make the tranny much easier to work on and durable because there's less to go wrong.

But in 2nd, you should be able to lug down to 5-7mph no problem.

Who needs 1st anyway:)

The non-synchroed first gear keeps you honest at stop signs. I just quickly shift from synchroed second or third to first at a dead stop.

Why would you come to a complete stop before double clutching? Downshifting while moving is the whole point of double clutching, isn't it?

I can downshift into first by double clutching anywhere under about 15 mph without much gear mashing. It takes a little practice to do it smoothly, but it certainly isn't hard.

Good luck!

Just for everyone's information, because there is some confusion, can you explain the double-clutching procedure.

Push clutch, take it out of 2nd gear.
Release clutch and match engine revs to drivetrain speed.
Very quickly push clutch and engage first gear before the revs fall too low.

Once you have mastered this, try shifting with no clutch at all. My brother has that gift...any car, he can shift without clutch. I have only done that a few times.

Ok, well for a year I drove long haul semi truck and learned to shift without a clutch, so I should be able to do the same for the frist gear in this thing.

Thanks.

To shift without clutch

Shift out of gear to neutral (easier to do with cutch)......if shifting from 2nd to 1st put slight pressure on your stick and then rev engine to match engine tranny speed and it will pop in......if shifting from 1st to 2nd.......rev high to shift to neutral without clutch.......pause allowing engine speed to slow and apply pressure on stick until it pops in. We still have some old fire engines at work that are 5 and 7 speeds with all non synchro'd gears. It's easier to do with a jake brake and a clutch brake on 1st. You also sometimes have to use a clutch when testing for you semi (class A) just to prove you can do it since some guys only learn to shift wihout one, but I digress. Have fun! I just had to drive my jeep home with no clutch :>) Girlfriend couldn't understand how I did it.

Dude...did you say your drove your j**p home with no clutch...please tell us that this was not actually your Cruiser

Nope it was a heep.......with a large gear np435 in it so that helped. I'm sure a small gear tranny would have been a B!tch. And I forgot to say that if you're clutch goes out you can just start it in first and shift from there :D I'm building the metal tech cage for the cruiser right now......

Gears and gramps

I thought that it would be easy to do with my "vast" truck driving experience (5 trips, haha) but it aint ! The best I could do is to manage to slip it in 1st while moving slowly with minimal drama, which really was all I needed anyway. Those little gears seem to be spinning way to fast and I cant bear the grinding noises!

Brings to mind the time I was like 17 and I had a little fiat 850 spider and I could not shift that car without getting a little noise from the gears meshing each time I made a shift up or down. I was amazed when one day my deaf old grandfather got in the car to drive it once with me and to my amazement, despite his deafness he shifted that little car without making a sound from the gear box. He was a master diesel mechanic and could just instinctively feel when to shift having never even driven the car before. Damn I miss that old guy, he was the one I called at 330 in the morning when one of my jalopies broke down on me, hed get up grumble and tow my ass home, then help me fix it for how ever long it took. Heres to you Gramps wherever you are . Gramps was not a drinker, but he smoked unfiltered camels and rolled them up in his sleeve like Marlon Brando.

And oh, I have driven many a car home without a clutch with no damage.

The next time you catch the 'Bullit' chase on the box, primo example of double-clutching toward the end of the chase... I think after the Charger crashes... haven't seen it in a while.
