Count me and the kids in for the fishing. My wife will read a book. I'll bring fly and spinning rods for each of us. Do typical western patterns apply: Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulators, Prince Nymphs, Pheasant Tails, Wooly Buggers? These work well in NM. I'd be happy with stops at creeks and lakes. Maybe one of the runs should be a fishing trip that just includes a few short trails between the fishing spots.

I'm in depending on my job situation... I'll be bringing my wife who doesn't camp, so we will be staying in a nearby hotel/resort..

We will be camped at an undeveloped primitive site 10-15 minutes outside of Ouray. There will be a portapotie provided but we ask that you bring some of these.. We will be base camping here each night. I will have a trailer set up for the duration. I would bring at least 5 gallons of water with you, you can always refill in Ouray. First three posts have been updated a bit.

Are the roads leading to this site mild enough that I could drag a borrowed pop-up camper with no worries of damage or should I plan on bringing the tent?

All will work. That late in the season, ants will be a staple too. If we do a wheeling/fishing run, I'll have enough flies for everyone.

Awesome. I will have to rely on you guys for lures. All we use is popping bugs here.

Wish I could convince my wife to do that. She doesn't camp either, and so far a hotel in Ouray or Telluride can't even persuade her. Oh well...

Did you show her Chipita? That's close enough to camp. Spa day while you wheel!

Once I get the 100 and get it all ready by next year I am planning a trip to this meet if its done again next year with my oldest son.

Its on my bucket list to go out west once at least and especially for something like this.

It'll be a trek from Eastern PA but hey getting there is half the fun right?

Hopefully look forward to next year for me.

:)

Would cute babies convince her?

Or cute dogs?

There will be a lot of wives and significant others on this trip. It's a great time for those unsure about camping to interact with the veterans and share experiences. I love taking people camping that have little to no experience with it and most of the time they come away after the weekend with a positive outlook on it and wanting to do more.

Please advise...

Or incredible vistas?

It's worth a shot...she does love cute babies and dogs! If she comes by 3year old daughter will as well. I'm doing my best.

I'm assuming that in the primitive camp the only shower provisions are the ones that we bring? Any places in town where you can get cleaned up without staying? I don't know how 'outfitted' i can get in the next 7 weeks.

That being said, Jon you seem to have this all figured out. Maybe post a 'must bring' list for us southern guys?

Yep. Primitive camping with no water. Bring your own in. Public Showers can be had at these locations:

http://www.ourayriversideinn.com/
http://koa.com/campgrounds/ouray/
Maybe the hot springs too.

Good Idea on the list. I can see how some might over/under analyse things. I shure would.

Must Bring: Food, Shelter, Water, Transportation.

Food: quick breakfasts are best unless you are an early riser. Lunch premade or prepairable on the trail. Camping dinners. Bear are a possibility (black bear which are not very threatening) so we will want to pack food away daily. In 15 years of camping in Colorado I have never had a bear in my camp.

Shelter: I do not recommend camping unsheltered. Rain is common in afternoons and possible in evenings and it can get really cold. Tents and trailers are the best because we are base-camping. You can leave things setup for the duration. RTTs are fine but keep in mind you will be packing it every day.

Clothing: Temps on the trip can range from 20 degrees to 90 degrees. Plan accordingly. Nights will likely be in the 30s-40s with day time highs in the 60s-70s. Rain is possible. Bring sunscreen and bug spray!

Water: I would bring 2.5-5 gallons. for drinking and washing. Water can readily be refilled or purchased in many towns.

Fuel: No extra fuel is necessary. We will never travel more than 50-60 miles from a gas station. It's just added weight.

Transportation: A good running vehicle with good tires as a minimum. Must have a matching size spare. Mechanics are available in Ouray/Silverton/Lake City/Telluride but good luck finding one on a weekend. You will likely wait till Monday and parts availability is an issue. The closest Toyota Dealer is in Montrose, 1 hour from Ouray and there is a great shop in Grand Junction, Safari-Ltd if you need something major.

What you Should bring

CB or 2M or Both: You will enjoy you experience much more if you have one. I typically try to give some history/geology/geography talks as we drive and others have great things to contribute. We will be on the trail for long days and your day will go much better if you have one.

Fire Wood: If there is no burn ban we will have a communal fire pit nightly. Bring wood to share. The more wood the better.

Games: It's been mentioned already, but some outdoors games for around camp are fun.

Light: headlamps are your best friend.

First Aid/TP/Fire Extinguisher/etc.

Spares: A great thing about this being a 100s run is the duplication of everything. Chances are someone has what you need. I carry a CV, coil packs and some other small parts. There is a great list here. If you don't have a CV, I wouldn't rush out and buy one.

Camera: Contrary to bluecruisers' sentiment, you really should bring a camera to capture your own memories. The more pics the better. I will start a trip report thread after the trip and hope everyone will contribute. It would be fun to do some photography sessions with those interested for night photography and timelapse to share tips and tricks.

Liquor!: Camp is a great time to share brews from around the US. I will bring some local micro's and hope others will bring stuff from their neck of the woods.

Most importantly. A good attitude and desire to meet and spend time with new people.

Sounds good. Couple of question for Jon,

I know you bring your dog, how are ticks and Mosquitos out there? They don't exist where we live but we started our dog on he artwork for the summer camping season.

It says 100s in the hills but can other models come too? My friends was toying with caravaning there with me in his 4runner. If a nearly stock 100 could do it, I assume a 2nd gen 4runner with sliders and lift could make it too?

Also, it sounds like we're in a large group not far from town with a lot of kids around, so should we leave the Arms at home?

My family and my dogs have never gotten ticks. I think you are pretty safe. The mosquitos can be pretty prevalent. It's not as bad as other parts of the state but you still need protection. Deet is your friend.

This is a point of contension. It has always been 100s only. We have discussed alowing 200s because they are the red headed step child more so than we are, but kind of the point of the run is to experience it with like vehicles, learn from eachother, what works and what doesn't and put faces to the names of people we converse with daily online. The elitist side of me want's to say no to other models as there are lot's of other events out there. An example, I along with the other directors of the FJ Summit, are on board with making it a more Toyota centric vs FJC exclusive event which welcomes all models.

Also, it sounds like we're in a large group not far from town with a lot of kids around, so should we leave the Arms at home?

Please follow Colorado state and all other applicable laws. That's all I really need to say about it. Your rights will not be infringed upon by us. No shooting directly around camp is all I would ask.

Great list Jonathan!

I always carry wet wipes too. A ton of them. I use them for cleaning my hands and they double as a camp shower. I also carry a small propane camp stove for heating water. I'll heat just a few cups and use the wipes as a wash cloth. That way you stay clean and fresh and use very little water in the process. Plus, twosies are in a wag bag...... you'll want wet wipes.

They're always good for wiping down spills and cleaning your interior/gear too!

I can't speak for the rest of the group but HAM radios are pretty rare here...will a CB suffice, or will most of you 'high country' guys be on HAM?

I meant to go do the HAM traning, etc, before this, but just no time...

CB will be plenty. We will be pretty close together most of the time.

Stan, don't forget the Carnauba wax. May I suggest this

i vote for keeping it a HUNDYS event.....i guess the the 4Runner guy could crash the G-Wagon event in Ouray...bring the tire shine!!!!!;)

Have a buddy that's a jeep guy in CO springs that wanted to come. Told him he could meet us in Ouray but the jeep had to stay parked out of sight! Hope this is ok? Odds are he won't even come.

Hundys only just sounds better!
