my cruiser has 149k, thought I scored haha.

You did.

Alright, so tomorrow I'll check the spark plugs and try a coolant flush and check for leaks.

Pull the plugs. look for #1 or #6 to see if they are REALLY clean. If they are, yes, then you probably have a HG failure. I doubt they are. Do you know when the plugs were last replaced? I'd call your local toyota dealer and get new plugs. They will come already gapped properly.

Check all of your hoses. Look for small leaks. You'd be surprised how much coolant you can lose from a small leak in a hose. Especially this time of year.

I'd bet money that it isn't.
Mine has 299.7k, which is why I was thinking possibly HG failure. With 149k, I don't think there's any way the head gasket could fail without other serious problems occurring simultaneously

Are there diagrams of the coolant hoses out there? I have the big expensive service manual for the fj80, is such a diagram in there?

There should be, check page one of the EM section. I don't have one with me right now but that's where I would start checking

If this is a HG issue, Im gonna be pretty pissed. I decided to buy the fj80 over the fzj80 out of fear that the HG would pop on the fzj.

Alright, now quit muddying up the 3FE Owners Check-in thread. Go back to your white smoke thread! :flipoff2:

hahahahahaha

Dude, we 3FE owners are pretty laid back. We have all the time in the world...

Hey y'all. I've been on here for a few weeks now and I've owned my '92 FJ80 for about that long. I bought it from a fellow mudder off of craigslist. It's got 214k on the body, and about 13k on a motor refresh. Flowed head, RV cam, header, split second MAF, desmogged, dual electric fans, safari snorkel, 4.88's E-lockers, 35's, '96 rear end, OME J springs (for now), drop brackets, adjustable panhard bars, slee short bus, 4x4 labs rear, Iron pig skid plate, and several other mods I am probably forgetting.

Since I've owned it I've done the following:
led headlights, interior lights and reverse lights, oil change, and wiper blades... haha..

Future upgrades:
better oil pressure gauge, (it has a cheap aftermarket one in it now)
roof rack
rear tire swingout
fix broken 11,000lb winch that came with rig. (I think motor went out)
and I'm fairly certain I need a valve adjustment. not sure if that's the cam or just how these motors sound. I'm all new to the 3FE world and the FJ world.

I do however look forward to taking my family on overland trips and getting out and enjoying the wonderful outdoors. eventually I want to make the 6 hour road trip to the Rockies and spend a few days hitting trails and camping out up there.

Hello 3FE owners, I bought a completely stock 1992 FJ80 with 181k miles 6 months ago and have been baselining (new fluids, plugs, rotor, wires, etc) and doing the FSM tune up. Engine is running ok now but not perfectly smooth, there is still a lot of stuff on the PM list (O2 sensors, radiator hoses, FPR, FPD, new battery cable, etc.)

I recently posted a 3FE video on youtube, It’s a sound comparison before and after the valve adjustment, I think it might interest you:

Engine problems encountered and solved:
Engine misfiring heavily above 1200RPM----Solution: dizzy was off one tooth, timing was completely off (adjusted as per fsm)
Truck would crank but no start (NO CEL)----Solution: New fusible links needed
Wobbly PS pulley and jumping belt(non OEM)----Solution: new OEM belt, new OEM pulley, rebuilt pump with new shaft (stills wobbles very slightly, going to keep looking, might be THE bushing inside the PS pump, although no leaks yet).
Rough Idle (90% solved)----Solution: replaced cracked intake tubes, new vacuum lines.
Would take a LONG time for truck to warm up-----Solution: replaced cracked thermostat and temp sensor (BTW use PB blaster on the housing bolts, bolt broke and total PITA to remove the other half.)

I only found 1 thread on rebuilding the 3FE ps pump, if anyone is interested, I could post some pictures.

I wish to thank everyone who has posted 3FE stuff here in IH8MUD, specially the experts (such as Jon Held and LS1FJ40) for taking the time to answer hundreds of questions.
