My son and I recently purchased a 1970 FJ40 with an incomplete engine that looks like it was recently fished out of the Atlantic Ocean. We had decided to change out to a 2F but have found a great deal on a 3F (1986 FJ60). Question is, will it fit the 1970 frame? Mods required? Any expert advise from the hive is appreciated!

1986 US should be a 2F, 3F were carbed and overseas
it will bolt in, the 1986 will have the a/c mount/motor mount, you can swap it out with existing or leave it
some wiring issues, alt, oil preasure sender wiring
carb linkage
what trans are you going to use? will determine which bellhousing to use, you can sell the 3F bellhousing

Thanks 3_puppies. I’ve mispoken on the year, it’s actually a 1987 and, after doing a google, it is a 2F (with a bunch of goodies, just like you said). 1987 appears to be the last year for the 2F. It comes with a 4 speed transmission which will replace a 3/tree. Thank you for the feedback!

3 to 4 speed. Tranny hump and drivelines. Maybe a return gas line.
Might be worth considering using the 3sp's transfer case with the adapter shaft/gear no change in 4th but in low range low you would get about 1/2 a gear better crawling.

Regarding a transfer case, does it have a split case or a 1 piece case? The 1970 would have had a 1 piece case set up for the 3 speed. It can be adapted to an early 4 speed that had a 1 piece case, but I do not think the later split cases behind 4 and 5 speeds interchange. The shifter location may be different as well (was it more aft like the 60 series H55Fs?) You could probably find a 40 4 speed trans and t case together or adapt your earlier t case (2.3 to 1 rather than 2 to 1 low range) to a 40 series 4 speed.

With the 3-speed transfer case on the back of a pre-'81 4-speed, you can continue to support the transmission/transfer case directly from the bellhousing without the need for the '81 and later rear transfer case support crossmember.
