new-fangled multilayer steel head gasket, and shiny resurfaced head!

both now installed but I'm still not up and running. The fittings for the heater hoses, one in the back of the head, and one in the waterpump, were made of s***ty metal and were heavily corroded. I was just ignoring it, but the head fitting disintegrated during the pressure test. Toyota should have replacements on Sat...

obviously this makes total sense, i just simply forgot - don't forget to reset valve clerances after you have your head surfaced! doh!

thankfully no damage, but i was wondering why there was some unusual shaking at idle and why the starter was able to turn the engine over so fast. valves were way too tight, not closing - its a wonder it ran at all.

so thats a tip.

 Skimming the head is irrelevant!!!!!!

You reputation as a mechanic is forever tarnished. :D

Oh please, I hang all my dirty laundry out here - my reputation as a mechanic was ruined long ago! :D

BJ42Gringo is a brave sort, he still lets me wrench on his truck...

It's hard to "break" these things. And even if you "f#%k something up", the truck will probably still run. Besides, mechanical incompetence is best enjoyed in groups - not alone! :flipoff2:

And might I add, you are pretty much a Cruiser MacGyver when it comes to all your solutions and fixes...

looking at your gasket, looks like you had #1 and #4 combustion leaking which tells me your head was worped.

I used a combustion gas tester to test the coolant so i'm pretty sure its HG time.

I think I've managed to blow the head gasket on my H. Where should I look for a combustion gas tester?

Edited to add: nevermind. I should have searched first. I found a number of different places selling them.

There is a thread on here somewhere about my experiences. I went through the trouble of ordering a "diesel" kit, but the fluid didn't work!

I emailed the company and they said the fluids do the same thing, but the diesel (red) junk is more sensitive.

I tried again with the gas (blue) fluid and it worked fine (e.g. changed color and told me I was screwed) it just took longer.

So my advice is just buy whatever you can find off the shelf and skip the shipping chrges for the diesel juju.
