As I have said to some who have asked me on the board, I dont like BFG Mud Terrains. Even so, a deal is a deal, so when I had a chance to get the rim & tire package off the bosses FJ when I lifted mine, I couldnt pass up the price. I ran several trails and did plenty of highway driving on them, including a trip to Las Vegas for the Toyota 4x4 Owners Event immediately following SEMA last year. Over the last 6 months I have confirmed my dislike for the BFG MT - its the Zima of off road tires. I have been a Goodyear MTR loyalist for several years, having run them on several trucks and they never let me down. They are quiet for a MT on the road, great traction off road, and the sidewalls are as good as they come. I was hoping to trade my MT's for a set of MTRs - wishing someone would want the extra inch and I'd have my good ol' Goodyears back & under my current rig. They were up for sale or trade for over a month and nothing was happening. Then I saw the ad for the new Pro Comp Xtreme MT and took a closer look. Having run the regular Pro Comp MT, AT & X Terrain in the past, I knew they made a good quality tire, but was always leary of the 2 ply sidewall. The new Xtreme Mud Terrain solves that issue, with 6 tread plys, and 3 sidewall plys. It also incorporates a new sidewall and tread pattern, with siping (little grooves cut into the tread blocks that aid in water dispersion, more even tread wear, and much improvd grip.) Being buddies with top staff at Pro Comp, I phoned them, and after they aswered all my questions, ordered up a set (YES I paid for them). They arrived yesterday and I was drooling over them and wondering how much of an improvement they would be over the BFG MT's, and if they will measure up to the bar the Goodyears set.
Well, I installed them this morning and I am extremely pleased with the look and performance they offer. They are much quieter than the BFG MT's, track much straighter over uneven pavement, cornering, and under hard braking. I also noticed that they are extremely well balanced - My BFG's were computer spin balanced twice and both times they had a slight shimmy at mid & higher speeds in the steering wheel. I peeled all the weights off the rims when changing them this morning and when I was driving down to have them balanced was expecting the worst. Man I was surprised to find out there was NO SHIMMY with NO WEIGHTS. I saw no need to have it done immediately. Every one of the BFGs had at least 3.5oz per wheel, some were as high as 6oz. To me that says quality. I am going to have my FJ realigned tomorrow and will have them check the balancing while they are at it, but I doubt it will need much.
First impression: These tires may be my new favorite. They look and drive at least as good as the MTR on the road, next week at Stoddard and the following week at TDS will be the tryouts on the off road areas, I'll report back when I have a better off road impression, or if any issues pop up. If you are tossing around buying a set for your FJ, they will be on a Buy 3 get 1 free special next month at 4 Wheel Parts - I think they were a good investment. Here are some pics for comparison, both are 35x12.5R17's:

Heres a comparison on the vehicle, Pro Comps in front, BFG's in back, remember, these are the same size tire. They make the BFG's look sissy -

And finally a front on shot, what lowered Hondas see in the rearview after I hit the train horns! -

I have ZERO regrets offing the BFG's and I'm dying to try these off road to see how they measure up.

I too don't like the BFG MT. I find the ATs OK for their purpose. I've never figured out how they have gotten away with their puny sizing on both tires. They just aren't even close.

I had heard that this is basically a rebadged Cooper STT with some sidewall graphics changes. If it is, I think it is a fairly good tire. I'm really interested in this tire as the price is a reasonable. I have the Toyo MTs and I like them but they are priced out of this world now.

Please report back in about 5k, and then maybe again in 10k.

Bah.. The BFG MT is the most durable tire ive experienced. (that is to say, in about 6 or 7 sets on various vehicles, all 4X4s, mostly Yotas, all abused, never a single failure)

I find that they ride perfectly well. You have to keep them rotated so they dont cup out!

If you want a bigger size, get a bigger size!!!

And lastly, they wear and last GREAT for a tire of that nature, and look awesome. (IMO, a much better look for the FJ than the Pro Comps, or Wranglers)

Having sold BFG's as a retailer I can tell you different - the sidewalls cut far easier than other premium brands.
FACT: Both BFG MT and Goodyear MTR use 3 ply sidewalls, BUT: BFG uses 800 thread per inch (TPI) sidewall plys, Goodyear and Pro Comp use 1200 TPI plys.

BFG tires have a higher rate of radial pull, meaning the tire can cause the vehicle to drift even though the alignment is correct.

BFG tires have a higher rate of seperation internally, especially at the shoulder. This can be seen on used tires fairly often - after a year or two "popcorn seperations" begin appearing between tread lugs on the outside corners of the tire where the ply pops through the outer rubber layer.

I have warrantied more than I could count for the reasons above, not as many as Swampers, but a huge amount for a "Brand Name Radial" compared to the ProComps & Goodyears I was selling. When I dropped off the truck at Discount Tire yesterday, the service writer there said I made a good choice and BFG's muds were a s#!^^y tire. Thats from another guy that sells them for a living, and doesnt sell Pro Comp.
I went with the same size tire, I swapped to get away form the noise, shaking and drift these tires provide. The Pro Comps emilinated every one of those issues.

Interesting... well, I guess Ive been lucky 6 or 7 times with nary a sidewall failure, blowout, or even a puncture.

I keep them rotated, and they track straight and true, and dont make noise.
(largest I have had is a 33" though, a few sets)

My brother had an older Pro Comp AT that did last a long time. He has 305 BFG MT's now that have been on his Tundra for quite a long time now.

Oh well, to each his own.

Those Pro Comps are nice.
I have the Dick Cepek Mountain Cats which are made by Cooper for Cepek, and very similar to the Cooper STT.

I did not go with BFs because everyone and their grandma runs them, and I like to be different and try new things once in awhile.

I like BFG AT's for the amount of off roading I do (or lack of). I've had a set replaced for the "popcorn seperation" you mentioned. The good thing about the seperation is the new set of rubber for zero $'s.

A lot of people dis the Pro Comps who have never even used them, but I've used them for years and can say they kick ass. Once when I trimmed my fenders but left some metal, a day of Moab articulation left one tire's sidewall slashed repeatedly, but it held up to the entire day's wheeling. The Pro Comps have a cool feature--a yellow layer under the black sidewall. If you can see that, you've ripped to the "final" layer before the sidewall goes. I was seeing yellow all over my tire (a 35" Mud Terrain) and it held up.

Here's a pic of it squashed flat but keeping on the rim.

I priced out the "1 free" deal and it still cost more than the Toyo MT's or GY MTR's from America's Tire.

BFG has a new MT tread design, it looks similar to their Krawler tread pattern. Might want to check that out if you are a BFG fan.

Keep us updated on how the PC XMT's do

Not sure what quote your getting but, they want $290 a tire (thats on sale!) for the toyos. The new BFG is 290+ a piece as well. I can get the PC XMT's for 250 a tire and only need to buy 3! Seems too good to turn down...

Anyone that has this tire, how has it been?

I've lost 3 sidewalls on the Procomp Mud terrains, all within 200 miles of new. very frustrating.
