Need to do the crank seal and oil pump cover this next week. Crank bolt requires 300 ft/lb torque spec. None of the local parts stores have nor loan these.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I've got two 150 ft/lb torque wrenches you can barrow. :)

After a quick search of local tool retail shops, didn't see any for rent (only up to 250 ft/lbs).

Harbor Freight has one for $80. Not the best quality, but would get your job done.

Man, don't sweat that. There's no way you're going to hold that engine back to get 300 foot pounds of torque on that crank anyway. That sounds like way, way too much to me anyhow. Bust the crank loose with the starter, put it back together with an impact or a breaker bar as tight as you can. It'll be fine, I've been doing it for years.

Ya i was gonna do the starter off method but wasnt sure about the retightening method.
Thanks for the ideas

If you can keep the engine from turning you can get close to the torque by hanging a known weight a known distance off the breaker/cheater bar to gett eh proper ft-lb.

I was able to get a harmoric dampener onto my 5.0 liter but is has MT so I could use a screw driver in the fly wheel to hold the engine. Also, I was able to borrow a 3/4 inch torque wrench.

Well a little update for those with a leaking 80 because if you haven't done the crank and oil pump seals you will be doing them soon! Thought i could put this off and just keep adding oil but now using synthetic the dripping is unbearable. First off is what a PITA. Even with the write ups in 80-tech the process is still slow going.
Everything is apart and now have to rig something up to hold the crank...the fun continues.

Lots of cuts, cursing and beer needed but easy enough if youre handy. Lmk if u need help when u do and ill try.

Didn't use a torque wrench. From what i read on here its pretty much impossible to over torque the bolt and you can always get it off with the starter if needed. Used a breaker bar and cheater bar over with lots of grunt.

I concur. 300 Pound feet of torque is ridiculous, I don't care what Toyota says. It only takes like 250 to crush a pinion sleeve, and I never could locate a torque wrench that went that high. You'll break a lot of screwdrivers, or really screw up some pulley's swinging from a 4 foot cheater bar, while trying to hold back that engine and achieve 300 pound feet. Nice work Josh, always more gratifying to do it yourself.

well thank you sir :grinpimp:

Famous last words.

Where there is a will there is way. Maybe my perspective is different from hanging around high performance engine crowd. To each his own.
