On flat ground 2nd is easily used from stop. On hill 2nd can be used from stop but a bit of effort sometimes. Overall in city traffic 2 nd is plenty low enough to take off from stop or crawl.

Column shift is rare in Australia as most have been converted over the years but yes 61~early mid 63 it was standard

I remember know one of the CA vendors was selling parts on eBay. They had a early three speed the shift posts came out the right not the left which would have been a.RHD.

Issue is not shifting from first to second but from second back to first. That requires practice double clutching. Starting first gear and being not being able to get into second gear there is a problem.

What I always did back in the day was shift into second to syncro the trans then into first when the red light turned green to keep from grinding going into first.
 
Was just having fun grinding my first gear today. Love it! Whadaya want, a jeep???
