thanks for the paint tip. i was thinking about having my steel guy bend me a piece like you did for the front bumper. figure for the cost of a bumper i can probably get some extra material for other bumpers and just DIY. what length are you going to cut it at?

Yep CCOT HFS bumper is pretty darn heavy and overbuilt. About the only thing I did not like was not being able to install the factory plate holder so I extended by 6 inch at each end. It no looks like the factory bumper bumper shorter.

Got up this morning and went and picked up a few parts from the acid guy. Got everything except the box, wasn't done yet.

I think they did a pretty good job, I'm actually kinda suprised how it stripped absolutley everthing in every nook and cranny. I had to work late tonight, but went out and took a couple pics. I ran the DA over the hood real quick with 220, just wanted to see how that was going to go. Probably spray them down with laquer thinner a few times and either DA them with 220 or go over them with a scrothbrite pad...or both. Then hose on a coat of DP and start fixing......

The steel I'm using on the bumper is 1/4", I see on CCOT's site they make it out of 3/8". So mine will be a little thinner there, but I still think plenty heavy for my application.

I'll probably end up using 3/8" flat stock on the plate that gets welded to the rear of the bumper...I think that needs to be fairly stout in the event I might actually have to use the winch.

Mine will also be a little longer. I'm sure there is a reason it is short for wheeling. I think 6" on each end sounds about right, but I'll eye it up when I get back to that later.

Got about 5 hours on the lpb between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Most of that was spent just going over all the parts I had acid dipped with the DA and 220 grit. Also rubbed everthing down with a scotchbrite pad...just wanted to make sure everything was cleaned up and ready for primer.

Shot a coat of DP50 and then later in the day shot a couple coats of ureathane primer on areas where I want to block sand. The hood, headliner and doors are going to need a little work, but shouldn't take to long to whip into shape.

And then the better half of today was spent with Poser (Steve)...............
... ....oh...the horror....... Just kidding, it was all good.....had a solid day talking about Landcruisers and bothering my neighbor for a bit. Steve also brought me up a few parts I needed for the lpb and lv....Thanks Steve And maybe we will see each other again on the way to Moab this spring....;p

Won't see much getting done now until Tuesday or Wed. X-mas activities with the family are going to take up my time for the next few days.

We used a chunk of 3/8s plate bent up on a big brake, formed it to factory inside spec. Then drilled mounting holes, cut curfs on the top and bottom of the bumper near the ends and formed it to look like a factory bumper with a torch and human power. Ground it down smooth, body filler in a few spots then painted.

I have never seen brown glossy paper, at first I thought you were using lower grade priming paper, but noticed a shine in the lights?

Mike, couple photos...one of the lv and the other is my 40 from 3 or so years ago when I painted it.

Basiclly you wet sand the entire vehicle with 400 grit. I then use soap and water and a gray scotchbrite pad and scrub down the entire vehicle. Especially in the corners and small areas, just in case you missed any areas with wet sanding and you have those areas sanded for the paint to stick to.

Got home from the x-mas family stuff this evening and got about a half hour in on the lpb.

Nothing special, just wanted to drill out some spot welds I knew had to come apart. I now know the acid dipping stuff doesn't get everywhere...although I didn't think it would. Had some perforation in the piece spot welded to the front of the hood and obviously the hardtop. Drilled out a few dozen spot welds, pics pretty much show everthing.

Probably get some time tomorrow night and start fabbing parts and welding in. I imagine I'm going to have several evenings in fabbing and welding parts in, including the doors. Hopefully by next weekend I can start priming and blocking everything out.

Got about 3 hours on the lpb tonight. Worked on the roof this evening.

Pics pretty much say it all....cut out bad spots, make new pieces and start welding in. Took a little time because I'm working with a 3 dimensional curve on the corners. Start welding on one end and start hammering and working it to the other end. Little welding on the upper lip, rotted out there.

Got everything primed up, hoping to maybe start on piece that spot welds to the roof and fastens to the windshield frame. I think that one is going to take a little while.....I'm missing most of it on both ends.

Got about 2.5 on the lpb tonight....all on the piece spot welded to the hardtop.

Pics pretty much say it all....it was a major pain in the ass. I think it turned out pretty decent considering I'm working with 6 different angles going 3 different directions? It took 3 different pieces, a lot of cutting and a lot of welding. After I primed it looked pretty factory. Probably shoot a couple coats of ureathane primer when it's back on and sand it out. I think it's all going to be covered up, but just want it to look as factory as possible since I have it all tore apart.

Have to work tomorrow night, so I am going to plan on getting a little work done on the other side before noon. Last pic is a few marks where I plan on cutting and welding.

Fairly white up here, but not a lot of it....at least not like where your at ;p We could use a little more of the stuff, local snowmobiler's would really like it I know that.
