My 89 toyota pickup has a rattling issue. I have never been able to run reg. fuel in it. It rattles under acceleration. Like a lot of vehicles do. I had been running premium fuel and it pretty much took care of it. I have noticed that it is still doing it a little upon accel. just at firs when I change gears. As soon as it gets on up inthe revs it stops. It starts great and shuts right off.

I had a new timing kit put in it around 6000 mi ago. at that time it didnt do it with premium fuel. The motor has 202K on it. It runs strong and uses very little oil. Overall it is a good motor. I think. I was wondering if it might have just settled in and needed to be retimed....? What do you all think?

Again it isn't that bad and it comes right out of it when the revs get on up.

What is the timing spec.? Thought I might have somene put a light on it and see if the timing is off?

Thanks in advance for the help!!

When you say "rattling", do you mean pinging? Could it be a pre-detonation problem?

The knock sensor is on the top/rear of that engine, and the harness that sits in the middle of the engine is prone to failure, there's actually a Toyota TSB bulletin out on that section of the engine harness. The problem is the intake has to be removed to get to it. It can be a challenge to get a dealer to commit to the TSB, many have never heard of it so they won't even look. I got into an argument back in 2002 with a local dealer over it, they were doing the headgaskets anyway on our '94 so I wanted the harness replaced. The drone behind the counter insisted it didn't exist, I had to get the Service Manager involved and the ended up apologizing, and replaced it for free.

What's a "timing kit"? Plugs/cap/rotor/wires? If not, when's the last time this stuff was replaced?

I was talking about belt and pulleys.

I replaced the plugs, cap, rotor, wires etc. 6-7K ago.

me and my friend just had this problem on his 91 ext cab 3.0.....then it started hard starting....then horsepower dropped down to nil..........turns out the timing gear keyway broke and was allowing the motor to slip out of time til it was approx 30-40 degrees advanced....i cant believe it still ran!!.......just a possibility

It isn't a pulley/belt problem...

IS just valves rattling. Like when you get cheap gas. This sounds nuts but I had a vacuum leak and fixed it on the intake hose and it helped. I ordered a new hose and thinik it may fix it. That and 93 octane makes it do good.

I just thought it might be a little out of time. They will do that when they are. If the time is perfect reg gas wont ping. Don't mind running 93 except for the cost$$
