Thank you. It has turned into a far bigger task than we thought. I still project
it will be ready for the party by the 2nd Saturday in Oct. I've been putting in a minimum
of 4 -5 hours a day on this task for weeks. I'm taking a few days off now that it is "sealed"
as a structure.

Here's yer permit...right here :flipoff2:
Next thing yer goin' tell me is I can't have no outhouse. ;)

Actually if you were here you couldnt have an outhouse. Building and inspections would probably be out there regularly too, good thin you live in Pickens Co.

Where are you again Richard? Back in your old stomping grounds?

not so fast my friend

There is a thing called "grandfathered". As a pre-existing structure...I can assure
you it pre-dates MOST regulations...the attempt to force it's removal would be
ex post facto legislation enforcement. Ain't gonna happen. They'd have to condemn
the structure and no legitimate gov't purpose would warrant that action.
LOL...I'd make me some atty fees as a result of such Gestapo tactics.
So, if I lived there (and I'm glad I don't) and IF I had me an outhouse and IF it pre=existed
before regs...I bet I COULD keep it.
Ain't America great! :hillbilly:

That is all well and true David but you are overlooking the great regulatory clause which allows us to get rid of your outhouse and make you bring everything up to code. That being that the value of your renovations is greater than 50% of the value of the structure being renovated. I dont know what Pickens has but most city/county govt's have a clause like that in there and I know we do here in Isle of Wight County, VA (your answer Andy). It wasn't to long ago maybe 6 months that there was a big news story about a guy not being allowed to put his outhouse back that had been there for like 60yrs and was grandfathered in and some church built him an addition that was just a bathroom. Can't remember if that was in SC or not though. Also we could always just claim health, safety, and well being of the public when we told you no outhouse because they are neither healthy nor that safe.

You are off base my friend. There is NO WAY to require me to remove the outhouse
short of condemnation and that would fail.
Your faith in the all powerful Gov't is misplaced.
I've litigated these issues successfully in the past and I think I know a little
about the limitation on Gov't action.
Note your little "story" includes the moving of the structure and it's SUBSEQUENT attempt to replace.

It seems to me that whether you can keep the outhouse and whether you can use the outhouse are two separate issues.

In this case the outhouse isn't just covering a hole in the ground. The bottom has a trap door for the
stink buckets so sanitary disposal is possible.
I don't expect anyone to drop a log in the dang thing. At least not while sober. :hillbilly:
Beer disposal is covered under the saying "I am Man...the world is my urinal.".
We all know it's just for show, but in a pinch....it's functional. :grinpimp:

Dont you love how we turned this post into a look at county politics and legal maneuvering.

It's my understanding that if your renovations are greater than 50% of the value of the building than regardless of age it has to be brought to code. If the outhouse wasnt to code you'd have to then remove it. So it would be on you whether or not it got removed but we could make you renovate it. Its alot like the story I linked except I think they just really wanted to come up with some way to get that guy to sell his prime real estate he wasnt doing any renovations.

Heres that story about the guy. They just declared his outhouse a public nuisance and got it removed. Ended up replacing it with a new outhouse which was essentially a port a john.

Its all good though cause I'll just walk the 100' to the house if I'm out there. I wouldnt use your outhouse either way.:flipoff2:

Ahhh...it seems that one was just over a hole in the ground. Ewwwwww
Our outhouse as noted above was a "nice" one. These here :hillbilly:
were high class all the way. Shoot all I had to do to renovate the
outhouse was sweep and remove spiders. That and a coat of paint.
So how's that equal 50% renovation?

Edit: Make my day. Try to have it removed. The press would be funny as chit.

let the furnishing begin

Started adding some stuff today. Skins should be in tomorrow.
Still have to hang the old family pics and put down the braided rug.
Screen porch only has 2 rockers and not much else.
The Aladdin lamp on the coffee table needs a new mantle. I was shocked
after a goggle search what those old boys are fetching these days.$$$

That's sharp! Great job David!

Finished framing of the windows inside. Repaired the hearth. Installed the doors'
hardware. Hung the deer hide and deer head. Caulked the siding. Still waiting
on the interior floor to dry to patch a couple of places. Filled the jugs. ;)
I need to build some steps for the screen porch. I'm debating wood vs stone.
Next week I'll haul off the lumber scraps and then it's open for visitors.

Hey Juice, maybe David will set us have a drink at the cabin on Wed. night before we leave for Tellico! I'll bring the scotch.

Sure thing! I'll even provide some fine tobaccy. I added some reading material tonite
and candles for the candle lier. Mooney's Myth and Legends of the Cherokee, Loaded for Bear,
The Red Carolinians, Moonshiners Gone? and Tracking and Reading Signs are the current library contents.
I'm adding a checkers board for the screen porch.
