I found a toyota diesel today and it says 2LT turbo in red on the valve cover. The guy has know idea what its from and either do I. The turbo is missing but everything else is there. I have an 83/60 that i would like to convert to diesel. What else am I going to need. My 60 is a 4 speed.

Just wondering where you are from?
I am guessing Canada or the US.

If the 2LT is from a wrecker, it probably came out a mid 80's Canadian toyota mini truck. There is also a pretty good chance that the head is cracked if it's a a wrecker. Take a read of the forum. The 2LT is bad for that.

In any case I would not use the 2LT.
The 60 series is to heavy a truck for a 2LT.
If your going to all the work, I would look for a little more power than what the 2LT can offer. Personally I would look for a 3B, and then turbo it.

Many threads on diesel conversion and turbo's if you do a search.

Cheers,
Nick

Thanks for the response. I am in Canada, I figured for $75.00 it might be worth the money.

nova scotia freight might be a problem. Motor is complete starter alternator etc

I've got the 2L-T turbo parts if you want to make it complete. Toyota CT-20,
2L-T x-over pipe and 2L-T exhaust manifold.

even with frieght the deal is still good. A spare engine for light duty under 700 bucks. :) I would do it light duty. Also you could slowly get it all fixed up and rebuilt. New head... etc. Then when your engine gives it the ghost yur ready :)

would not the block, head and turbo be the same? with the exception of an electric injection pump???

the block is "mainly" the same but may not be fully compatible (I have not been able to confirm or infirm that myself yet), the head is completely different, so are the water pump, oil pump housing, manifolds... The injection pump will interchange on and the turbo will bolt on as well but will need a different outlet elbow.

Wayne hasn't chimed in, and I don't mean to speak for him at all, but there are serious head problems with that engine. I'd look elsewhere, given the info. avail for that engine. As Nick said, a 3B or a 3BT.

I think you mean to say the 2l-te and 2lt-II is known to have head problems. The older style "2lt-1" as Denis calls it with rocker arms and 2lt turbo printed on the valve cover is more robust in my personal experience. This is a great motor for a mini pickup and thats about all. Price is right so somebody grab it.

of all the ones that went in North america trucks, you don't hear of the same issues of head cracking. But like I said "hear". On toyotadieselmaddness they talk about this engine like crazy. They all want one.

Well I have 3 2LT1 cracked heads sitting in the shop right now. 'nuff said :D
2Ls (non-turbo) on the other hand seem to be a lot more durable thanks to the lower combustion temps and pressure.

There are several around here I know that have original head and all are over 250,00kms. Why the difference? ;) I will clarify my last post in that I dont like the design of the 2lt1 head but it should last a good long time with regular maint and "light duty" heh heh general use.

I wasn't planning on putting the engine in my truck - too many hassles moving to mechanical IP with the electronically-controlled auto. By hassles I mean putting in a manual tranny, which I'm guessing would be the only way to do it...

If you can't use the engine, I'd suggest parting it out on eBay. You'll recover your money many times over. Put that money toward a decent 3B or 13B-T or a decent donor truck.
