86 2H 60-series-I’ve had it about 15 years doing frame-body off restoration-literally was just getting ready for a long ‘walk about’ test drive and this occurred.

Rig has sat for over a year and always started instantly and purred-oil pressure on the higher side of specifications: when I first got it pulled oil pan and a main and rid beating to inspect and they were perfect like they’d been installed recently. Prior owner was supposedly a marine diesel mechanic-I thought he’d gone through it since it ran so tight, smooth and no smoke except startup.

Setting; rig was in shop for a couple days while I replaced broken battery clamp and turned up the fuel for more power—shop 55’F-started up and moved throttle to warmup idle of about 1,000 rpm pulled out of shop-closed door and when I went out it had just started knocking hard-louder underneath than in engine bay and sounds like near back of engine.

Reduced throttle-still knocking (not fuel knock sound nor cold diesel sound), so turned off-let it sit then started again instantly knocking sound..took another rig for errands and 1/2 hr later tried start up-knocked right away in same location; oil pressure still great….? Smoking not changed-just minimal startup smoke.

I’ve attached a short vid so you can hear/see.

?spin a rod bearing?..Or maybe mainbearing? Combustion chamber precup came loose in head?-but that would be top end noise..?—fuel system problem but then sound would be consistent-not one area?—sound is greater on bottom end.

I used to be a truck driver and recognize most sounds-rebuilt a 6.9 diesel and have done gassers—so have a descent knowledge—but tracking down problem sounds as to what they are so I can take apart the right area..
So-after 15 years of hard work, thinking I was done…im not.

I sincerely appreciate detailed input and help-Thankyou!!2H knock vid

Never attached a video before-not sure if working..

Have you confirmed thats not an exhaust leak? Pull the oil cap off whilst its running as well, do you see puffs of smoke?

whatever it is i wouldnt run it anymore, precup will faulk things up real fast, prob lower end bearing, if they looked that new did the last guy throw some in because of the same issue then sold it?

Thanks for the quick reply guys!
As to engine blow by; no-it’s great-very tight.
Regarding bearings-I dont think so, the journals were pristine as well—prior owner sold it as he was selling everything and moving to Alaska full time-he was a fishing ship diesel mechanic and was tired of flying back and forth to lower-48.

Other than pulling the oil pan and bearing caps-any other step to narrowing this down?
Thanks

Good question DMJAY…been wondering that myself—Monday I’m cleaning the shop-tools away and such getting ready to work on the LC. So Tuesday I’ll drain oil and pull the pan and rear rod bearings.

I’ll post when I find out.

Update: talked to 4wheel auto in Canada and they suggested first checking for air in the injectors as they’ve had some pretty loud air knocking—did the bleed procedure and no improvement—oil draining now, no off color or pieces of metal observed…pulling pan and bearing caps tomorrow—maybe it’s just a loose rod cap😁…not likely.

Found the source of the knock!
Wow, wish life was a bit easier sometimes..
Pulled pan and a couple rod bearings: as you can see bearing and journals are great!

Next was top end-pull a bunch of stuff to be able to pull an injector where noise was loudest (4 cylinder)-top looked good-so tried boroscope camera but mines too big-pulled glow plug to see if it fit there-no go.

BUT; check out the glow plug next to another one-the glow portion broke off in the cylinder!—problem found!

I believe this is really rare-I remember ages ago for our 6.9 ford diesel the parts store warned me of this CB problem on fords and to always buy quality injectors and replace them every 2-3 years.
I put these injectors in years ago but only about 3,000 miles-the rig has been going through frame/body off restoration so hardly run—

Has anyone experienced or heard of this happening on a 2H engine before?

If so-was there a trick to getting that stub out?—im guessing not.

Have another small tipped camera coming tomorrow so I can look into the cylinder and determine if valves-piston head or cylinder walls are shot—then I can make a parts order and start the process of in frame head removal-BUT; if cylinder too damaged then I’ll need to pull the engine to get that cylinder bored over-new piston and possibly valves in that hole-plenty of unknowns—tons of work….

probably has been smashing that glow plug tip into things in there... do you think the injector went bad and was leaking/dumping fuel in there and caused this or just crappy glows?

Hi Bj70-the tip of the injector looks good, just some minor soot-no carbon and not wet. Engine runs tight-smooth; no smoke and no shudders.
So, I’m guessing defective glow plug-so I’ll replace all 6 in this process.

might want to get the atomization/ pop pressure checked tho

those two glows look different too...dont they

Yes, the good one is part of the old set from many years ago-during body/frame restoration and engine out I put new GP in but always save old parts ‘just in case’-I like to be proactive when easy access—I just used it in photo for length comparison—I’ve had small chips off them in an old ford power stroke ages ago-those will pass through-but not a solid 2” stem-I pulled the other 5- a few minutes ago and they were all in great shape-but still tossing them all for new Japanese ones.

Take care

ahh

As a wrap to this thread; just got head off-thought I’d post some photos. 1-photo is piston top, notice 2-shiny spots at top: glow plug pieces smashed into piston top, 2-photo are the 2 GP pieces after removal with scraper, 3-photo is head with corresponding 2-shiny spots but no damage to head or valves.

Cylinder wall has no damage.
Next cleanup and prep everything for install while I wait for parts to arrive.

Could have been worse…..

Take care all.

Thanks guys—
Well, thought it was getting easier…started cleaning carbon off head—5-precups cracked, solvent washed looked closer, looks like beginning of cracks squiggles..on 5 cylinders-one to find a machine shop-called a lot of places that test but they don’t weld-Monday need to call more….id rather fix and not be sorry later, but man, this is getting painful.

Enjoy your weekend all-I’m done in the shop-need to spend time doing something else for a change.
Take care

pre cups are always cracked, head is usually too, some are hard to see with the eye....

this is the road to a new head... was for me, if you find a place to weld let me know, ill ship my old head there to get welded too...

I’ve narrowed all my calls to one place that other shops send there stuff to, but they work early hours 4.5 days a week so missed them Friday afternoon so will call early Monday. They supposedly do all the work in house-old school like shops used to do—the culture has changed for most things to ‘pull and replace’ with new or wrecking yard parts-not fixing. The skill and knowledge base has retired or passed away ….plus a lot less people know how to even do the work to pull and reassemble—we grew up very poor so everything had to be fixed at home—all rigs were always very used at purchase.

I’ll let you know once things are sorted-either way have to find a solution: come 15 years in this restoration, need to do the engine too end so I can enjoy the fruit of those labors and park the power stroke with 345K.
Take care
